Hey all,

Was told to post this here (and thanks for the help with identification).

Today I found my first button... and a few minutes later, my second one. Both are identical. I've been told they are NY Militia flat buttons, with a left-facing eagle seated on a globe and the word Excelsior beneath them. On the back are the words TREBLE GILT ORANGE.

Thanks to some good advice (lemon juice, Q-tips, and some patience) they cleaned up amazingly:

Happy hunting!

Your first button? Those are incredible button.

WOW! They're two great buttons, thanks for posting them up and welcome to TN.

That is a pair of beautiful early NY Militia buttons. Would love to dig one of them myself!

Both awesome buttons ! :occasion14:

They are absolutely gorgeous! That's the same way I found my St. Timothy's Hall buttons, close together. Doesn't happen very often and a hard to get button for you.

Those are incredible :occasion14: It'll be tough to beat those as your 1st and 2nd buttons! Awesome job.

Awesome buttons!!!!! Congrats and HH

Thanks all! Yes, cleaned them with lemon juice and some Q-tips (and some patience). The gilt was perfectly preserved just beneath the dirt.

Both are.....NY040C1 in Tices.

I would have soaked them in lemon juice they looked stable.

If these were your first buttons, after finding another 1000 you will realise just how lucky you were.

Nice looking buttons. I found the same one a few years ago, and it is still one of my favorite.
Yours are in better shape. If those dont get you hooked on relic hunting, then nothing will. congrats...

Thanks for that. Does Tice's quote approximate value, too? Not that I'd sell them but my MD club uses value to determine who wins find(s) of the month... and I'd like to win this month. :)
