Hello All. Found this hunting with Btoots last week at the beach, about 16 inches deep. It is 25.4 grams of shipwreck silver and represents several superlatives for me. First piece of shipwreck silver found, Biggest piece of silver found, Oldest piece of silver found, Oldest piece of anything found...I could go on but you get the idea...

We did not know what it was at first and I put it in the "look-at-later pile" for a couple of days. I am very happy to have found it...many thanks to Btoots for suggesting and organizing the hunt...I owe you SIR MIKE SIR!!

I have spent several hours over the last few days cleaning it, hoping NOT to see the word "COPY"...this thing is astounding and authentic. The back, non-cross side, was totally crusted over with sand and is as amazing as the front side.

Used BuckleBoy's cleaning method...baking soda, tin foil, boiling water, and think I am gonna stop here for now while it still looks a bit like shipwreck silver.

Thanks for the view and may the finds be with you. C9

BTW please let me know if you have any special insights on the strike marks.

That ain't a copy. No worries. What a fantastic find.

Sweet coin and a decent clean up job.

Outstanding!!! Any guesstimate in the age of the piece? It looks great!

No doubts thats its real! My wish list is a Spanish Cob, but I secretly hope its an 8. Then I can sell the one I brought to fill the gap/hole thats in my life...lol

that's a great cob. I've never found one myself, i can't even imagine digging an 8 reale!

That is so damn cool! Something about the old hammered silver coins and those great designs. Great job

Good for you for cleaning and finding that coin. Keep in touch.

Mexican; after 1572--based on the globes (or spheres) at the end of the four extremities of the cross.
Turn bottom right coin 180 degrees for proper alignment.

Me likes a lot! Nice find. 16 inches? Were you using a PI?

Very Very nice. With that weight it seems to be an 8 reale, (it's off by a tiny bit but the salt water can take a little weight off.)

Sweet! Congratulations :headbang:

Thats a killer find!!
Congrats..

Cleaned up well, congrats once again on the great piece of silver.

I am speechless, that's a very impressive find.

Whaaaaa?!?! I would have lost my mind if I found a cob-O-8. I found a Mexican 8R this summer and put moss on my head and got bugs all over me (see avatar). Congrats!

Congrats! There is an amazing piece of history right there. Nice job on the cleaning, and good thing you didn't throw it in the trash pile!

That would be a lifetime find for most of us I dare say ! Incredible find .

It looks like a transitional clippe from Mexico because of the cross and design around the cross. Looks off having Seville and Leon on the wrong side of the top of the shield. Seville and Leon should be on the top left side of the shield and Tyrol on the right side. Doen't mean it's fake, it just looks weird. There are silver cobs from Potosi in the mid 1600's and gold cobs from Santa Fe De Bogata that have similar problems.

Yeah, looking at it again the whole shield looks flipped.
