2 Saturdays ago I located an old foundation site that dates back to at least the mid-1800's, I spent most of the day hunting the front yard and in/around the foundation itself and managed to pull 3 fried wheats, a few buttons and an 1892 Indian head out of the insane amount of iron I was battling against..Far more than I've encountered yet. As the sun began to set the AT Pro presented me with a loud and sweet tone accompanied by a solid 84 at 2 inches. As I popped the plug a large copper coin flopped out..I knew I had found my first Large Cent:hello2: My excitement was fairly short lived though as I got it home and discovered that it was completely toast with almost zero detail to be seen:BangHead: After hours in peroxide I was at least able to distinguish that it was of the Draped Bust variety..

I've been crazy busy with work but managed to steal some time last Saturday and headed there first thing in the morning. I decided this time to focus my efforts on the side and back yard areas and within an hour I was digging my second LC :headbang: I could even make out a date of 1833 on this one. A few buttons, relics and bits of trash later out pops my 3rd LC..another 1833 I couldn't believe it. About a foot away I get a solid 85 at 6-8 inches..it's a beautiful 1902 Barber quarter! My first Barber anything and it's in great shape:thumbsup: I worked my way over to the old well in the back yard and the AT Pro came alive with great signals..by the time I was done searching the area immediately around the well I had found my first Barber dime (1899) my first "demi Franc" or 1/2 Franc (1806-1814?) and my first key date Indian head (1873 closed 3) I finished of the day there with my fourth LC (3rd of the day) and the worst one I've ever seen..It looks like someone beat it with a hammer and also appears to have something stamped into it? Anyone seen this done before?

Thanks for looking as always folks and HH:icon_thumleft:

Misc goodies..

And these two items I am curious about, the first is a heavy iron ball about 3" in diameter, it's in the electrolysis tank now. could this be a cannon ball? How might I be able to tell?
The second item is about 9 1/4" tall by 4 1/2" wide at it's limits, at first I thought it was a stirrup but now I have no clue...any ideas?

thanks again.

Other thing looks like a henweigh

Thanks Vonclemen, I hope it does turn out to be a grapeshot as it will probably be the only one I ever find in Ohio!

And what the heck..i'll bite:laughing7:... What's a henweigh??

4 to 5 lbs!! Lol, it's what I call stuff I don't know what is ha. It's an old one

An amazing amount of stuff from one site. Love those heel plates with the designs in them. Keep the big copper coins coming. We love to see them. :notworthy:

Those are some fantastic recoveries!!! :notworthy: Congrats to you on those firsts. Some great old coins there. I can't find a Barber quarter to save my life. :BangHead:
Congrats on those two heal plates, and that great looking 1800's padlock. Is that "85" (1885) I see engraved on the keyhole cover?
Man, I would be pounding that spot hard for a long time.
Awesome finds,
MM

Awesome finds Birky! What part of Ohio are you located in? I haven't been able to locate a LC around Cincinnati yet.

Great finds guy ! I'd be camping out there on that site ! The silver spoon is a very grand find !!!- it may well be 1830's -40's
have you got any hallmarks on the back of it ??(could well be coin silver )

Wow, that barber is soooooooooo beautiful! What great detail, congrats on all those great finds!

Thanks Evo, I love those heel plates too, it took me a minute to realize what they were because of how small they are. Shame I broke the one with the clover:BangHead:

I hope I can indeed keep the big coppers comin!

Now that is what dreams are made of. Not uncommon here in TN to get a Barber but the large cents are few and far between. We are a little younger as a state. Been in some really old sites for TN that have been gone well over 100 years and digging tons of flat buttons etc but NO coins. Well within the LC time frame but NADA. Finding more than one LC in the same hunt would have required an underwear change for me. Congrats on an awesome hunt my friend.:icon_thumleft:

Thanks Miner! Hearing such positive comments from vets like you guys is always rewarding:thumbsup:
The padlock is definitely one of my favorites of the day, it is stamped "W. Bohannan- Brooklyn, NY- PATD. May 28.85"

No worries about that Barber quarter either, it's comin! and besides..you've dug spanish silver for cryin out loud:notworthy:

Cincinnati is the closest city to me too and I never thought I would find an LC either:thumbsup: They're out there Rob, it's just a matter of time..

I was determined to find one so I began studying the earliest maps I could find of my area and found two old home sites that looked like they had great potential for never having been discovered. This is the hunt(s) from my first site and I will be scouting the second one this weekend.

I've only been detecting for around 6 months and I feel extremely fortunate that I've dug such wonderful pieces of history.

Yes I'm surprised he didn't even metion that find. Solid silver-ware seems WAY harder to come across than coins, I would also think it a "grand find".
That is a great site you got going, and a real nice variety of finds coming from it.

Thanks Argentium:thumbsup: I've been meaning to look for more info on the spoon but in all honesty I barely had time to even make this post today:icon_scratch:

I did snap a quick photo of the hallmarks earlier today but not sure if it will do.. It appears to say "Rogers & Son" and then the rest is gibberish to me:dontknow:

I would love any additional info you can spare.

BTW: I will be returning to this spot on Saturday, can't wait! If I could've camped out..I absolutely would have sir.

Thanks Treble, I was amazed by it's condition as well. Definitely the best grade of any silver coin I've dug yet.

Thank you sir:thumbsup:

I typically haven't found many coins around these old sites either but fortunately this site is by no means "typical" It will probably never happen this way again..at least I'm not holding my breath!

Thank you Rick, and there's a couple very good reasons for me not mentioning the spoon.. 1st one being inexperience:laughing7: I knew when I pulled it out of the ground (the handle was exposed) that it was definitely of much better quality than other plated spoons I've dug so far but in all honesty..I had no idea it was solid silver, I simply just don't have the knowledge to arrive at that conclusion. The second variable for it being "overlooked" is time, I was so rushed in making this post that I left out all kinds of stuff???.

I'm learning though and with any luck (and much help from folks like you) one day I'll even be able to do the teaching:occasion14:
