Saddest find I've ever made

today.jpgtodayrear.jpgTo me, it's not "treasure". It's history. I was detecting the wreck site of the Faithful Steward which sank September 2, 1785 off the Delaware coast. I found a small silver ring from the site today. About 180 people died including women and children when that ship sank. Pictured is a small silver ring I found today. It's is very old and very fragile (found out the hard way), no markings and looks handmade. Upon closer examination it's an infant's ring. I did put 2 and 2 together...conclusion may be wrong, but it's probably from one of the infants who died in the wreck. The beach is not a popular tourist beach, and never has been.

Funny, two nights ago I had an odd dream that I was coming to the rescue of a "baby". In the dream, The baby was lightly covered like with a sheet lying on a flat surface, like the floor, somebody said the baby was blue, I figured in this dream the baby had died. Her name was Mary Regina. Awfully detailed dream for somebody I don't know. Odd. On a happier note I found a 1774 British halfpenny and a very old wheatie. ring.jpgring2.jpgring3.jpg

Great finds, yea that's very sad knowing that the finds came from the victims of a tragedy, but by recovering there lost items yurt just preserving there history and memory.

That dream made my hair stand up, and there's not much there. Very cool finds and to think that your dream may have come true....HH

The US Navy Hymn puts it well: "Eternal Father, Strong to save, whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bid'st the mighty Ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to thee, for those in peril on the sea."

I have ALWAYS remembered while detecting a battlefield, a shipwreck even a house those items we find belonged to real people.

An old acquaintance dug a lot in Virginia, in the Jetersville area. He told me the story about how he dug up a lead box several feet long and thought he had found a treasure chest. He told me inside was a child's skeleton with a couple Sharps' bullets in it. I was told that story at least 25 years ago, and apparently never forgot.

Yep, there is an aspect to this hobby that all too often gets forgotten. The circumstances under which the items we find were lost. We are overjoyed to turn up an old silver coin but we never think that maybe, just maybe, it rolled from the fingers of a poor unfortunate soul in our past. A breastplate with a bullet hole, broken necklace, a watch, a pledge to a loved one engraved inside a wedding ring, etc., etc., all things we get excited about now. Yet, there was a life attached to all of them. I think it best we don't lose sight of this.

A very nice find and a very sad set of circumstances.

HH!

I love when dreams seem to match life. There must me a list of the folks that died that day including the baby. Have you thought about trying to contact a living relative? Wouldn't be easy, but if it pans out just think how awesome it would be.

Wow thats kinda creepy

Here's the one I found about 200 yards north of where I found the ringgold.jpg. I think a little crab or bluefish chomped him.

Makes you realize how fragile life is.. We can be snuffed out in a second.
