Got out Saturday with my buddy Tom to my new favorite spot that has been so good to me this year. Previously at this place I found 16 coppers, 5 Spanish silvers, an 1803 Draped Bust dime, and over 60 buttons. Things had started to slow down here, but recent snows and frosts had knocked the grass down in some areas, and that was a difference maker Saturday. I started out digging a Half Cent in some weeds along the edge the field. The weeds had been killed by the frost, making this area huntable. Then I went into an area where the grass was knocked down by snow and frost. After a couple musketballs, I got a mid 60s signal on my F75. I finally had the little target in my hand and could see it was a silver coin, smaller than a half real. I was pretty sure I had a half dime, and after pouring some water out of my bottle on the coin, it was confirmed............
I had finally dug a half dime, or silver 5 cent piece, AND my first Capped Bust silver coin :headbang: an 1830. For some reason, half dimes and Capped Bust silver have eluded me over the years. I followed that find up with a beautiful 1772 two reale. This was my 9th Spanish silver for 2012. The last coin I dug was a worn KG II copper.

I had my camera with me and got some good dirt shots. The last picture is a group shot of all the silver I have recovered form this site.
Thank God they lost some silver because the coppers are toast here ???

Nice finds Steve,I'd sure like to find some of them big silvers!Looks as though you have rather nice hunting grounds. GodBless Chris

Dang Steve - you're continuing to kill it on that site. Awesome assortment of coins, and congrats on your first bust silver. Those are very hard to come by down here, and it took me many years before I dug my first. And I still only have 2. With all those finds there certainly has to be a lot more so keep hitting it hard before the ground freezes. Congrats again on an awesome day of hunting ..... Bill

Awesome silver Steve, you sure got to love it when the silver comes out looking like that. Congrats!!!!!!!!!

I love your early pieces of history. That's what its all about, finding those relics of the past

Your 2R is interesting in that the assayer's initials (FM) are inverted. A few years ago that variety was worth a little less than the same coin when the assayer's initials were not inverted. Today, the situation is reversed; your 'inverted' commands about a 20% retail premium over the 'un-inverted' variety.

Thanks Don, I hadn't noticed that. People keep asking me what it's worth. I had been saying "about $25", but I really don't know for sure.

Steve, I love reading your posts. Capped Bust silver coins don't show up on this site very often, and its a pleasure to see another one posted here. Great work.

What a day, What a hunt!! We ALL hope to find a site like that sumday. CONGRATS on ur 1st Capped Bust! The first is always the hardest Steve.. HH

Wow!! Seeing your silver finds keeps the relic fire burning! that is a wonderful site Steve..Congrats and thanks for posting!

Fantastic finds! You know, those Capped coins are hard as hell to find. I just dug my first one in 20 years back in January of this year, and my buddy Shane has been lucky enough to find his first--and his second Capped this year. That is an outstanding total from an outstanding site there, my friend.

Wow, what an impressive array of finds! You sure have some fantastic sites to hunt there Steve! What type of site is it just out of curiosity and how large? Congrats....Erik

What a nice site with great coins! I would love to find a bust coin (I finally found my first seated this fall and it took me six+ years to find that).

I hope to see many more posts of great finds from this hunting spot.

From what I can tell it was just a house site. I have no history on the place. There was one concetration of finds and there is a fairly large scatter pattern of finds from the main site outwards to the road. I was tipped off to the site by an arrowhead hunter who had found a pipe bowl and some musketballs.

That is the stuff that makes all the research worth it.. I am drooling over that draped bust.. beautiful coin..

Wow I guess that site was kind to you. Just that one site would make for a very decent year. I'm lucky to get one old silver from a site.

Steve WTG, did not realize it was your first Half Dime and Bust coin all in one! Long overdue for you, now the ice is broken, hopefully more to come shortly. The Two Reale looks good, hey, glad taking your camera did not jinx your hunt, I know I have used that excuse in the past! Great hunt and Great year for you!

Don
