Haven't been back here in years. This site was hot about 12 years ago and has produced hundreds of great finds in all inc well over a dozen Spanish coins. Its only 20 minutes from home and the wife and I needed something close to hit. Got a beautiful pair of cufflinks and then another which after washing off exposed a flower stamped in silver under the glass.
The farmer pulled up on us (no matter, already had permission) and we talked for awhile. Turns out he has more farms we can hunt. They're in maturing wheat now but next year we'll explore. A little research shows they too were parts of 17th and 18th century patents. Gotta be some old sites there as well.
He said Roundup was losing its potency and some farmers have started mechanically turning the soil more. Well, thats great news and maybe explains why we recovered so many targets on a previously hammered site.
Another thing, we never used to have groundhogs in this area. And I confirmed that with this same elderly farmer. Back when I started detecting there weren't any but now they're everywhere. They are wreaking havoc on the hilly spots where the houses sat. Thats probably not a bad thing for us either.
