Particularly if you’re a beach and surf kind of metal detectorist, we tend to count our gold and perhaps silver rings throughout the year. But, what do you do when you find a gold and silver ring? Do you label it as gold or silver?

Case in point; Yesterday I found this 925 and 18k gold filled ring that measures 3.5g. Based on American standards, the ring has to have at least 5% gold by weight to be labeled “gold filled”.

So in terms of pure weight, the silver content of the ring is about 3.325g and valued at about $1.63 (at $17/oz). The gold weight (18K), assuming 5%, is 0.175g and valued at about $6.63 (at $1500/oz). So, if you go by weight it is a silver ring. If you go by value, it is a gold ring.

How would you classify the ring; is it gold ring or is it a silver ring? The answer has serious and profound repercussions for those who keep a count of their gold and silver rings throughout the year.

I cant tell you which ever you wish of course........ but if im not correct the refinery wont give you anything on GF. Not enough for them to mess with. I have however found rings..... like Tung with gold bands..... i remove those bands.

Alright, guess I'll label the 925/18K GF ring as a silver ring...I was hoping to increase my gold count, but...
Thanks for all the replies.
Happy Hunting
