I hope your'e not tired of this stuff yet..........and more added..

I found another box of pottery in my basement
I didn't have time to look through it yet but I noticed these 2 pieces were laying on top of the pile
I can't believe I have found yet another owl face, a little different than the rest as usual
this makes 4 owls plus the pot that has 3 more
also the other pottery images show what must have been part of a pretty nice pot
it sure has a nice handle
note it has the marks made with the end of the makers finger, which clearly show her fingernail impressions
she sure had short fingernails (maybe she chewed her nails because her husband made her nervous all the time)
I thank you in advance for any comments or pottery images you may want to post on this thread

Get tired of it??? Right! Have you been lucky enough to reassemble any of your pieces? I think I have a few cup handles around here...Hey, just realized there is decor on the outside of these?

You can see how this "double" handle was made by using two pieces of clay rolled separately.

some broken handles and what may have been part of a pipe. (dang, didn't remeber that was even in there)

Thanks, Larson for letting me share your post. Oh, and the day we tire of your finds, will be the day we are all pushing up daisies! :D

Re: I hope your'e not tired of this stuff yet............

hey thanks BW,
that handle is very interesting and sure a lot different than I am used to seeing
I really like the type of marking that it has
I wonder how they did that and how they got that color
thanks for posting here
maybe we will get lucky and get some more photos and some more input so this thread will keep on going
I am going to sort out this box of pottery that I just discovered
if I find anything cool I will post it on this thread
I also see a bunch of fishing weights in the same box, think I should post them on another thread?

Re: I hope your'e not tired of this stuff yet..........and more added..

I just went through this box and pulled a few pieces
there are some more cool shards but I thought I could post these now
especially since I think I found another owl, which is probably my last (what is this big deal about owls anyway?)
I kinda like these topics of all this pottery hoopla
I never realized anyone was interested
1rst image a small owl
after that, several images of some handles
the last 2 images show what I think could be owl breasts and wings like the ones in the post with the complete pot
they really are very similar, do you agree????

Iam hoping SoIll will chime in here and give his opinion

what you think???
thanks, larson1951

thanks, lars

Re: I hope your'e not tired of this stuff yet..........and more added..

these are some more of the pieces that came from the box of stuff that I gave to my good friend Russy
these images are a little more of the same kinda stuff as before, and a little bit of other images
the difference is that these have a patina on them that make us think that they could be up to 3000 years old or more????
please and thank you in advance for the favor of your opinions and kind and informative responses
sincerely,
lars and russy

Re: I hope your'e not tired of this stuff yet..........and more added..

I will never tire your seeing your stuff.Do you think the pottery was painted black or is that patina?I love the flint knife...and all this was just in a box in your basement???Man what a problem to have lol....Thanx for shareing..Neo

Re: I hope your'e not tired of this stuff yet..........and more added..

thanks neo,
the pottery must have ash mixed in it as it is black inside and out
maybe 1 piece out of every 50 or more is the natural clay color
they must have mixed ash in almost every batch
yes it was in a box that had been sitting for about 15 years
I found a bunch of scrapers also which I will try to post

Yeah Larson that looks like the same design except that one appears right side up.

I think the owl was probably like the tribes mascot. On Mississippian sites around here I've heard that certain animal effigies are more dominant than others.
I've seen a few owl effigies that come from Kincaid Mounds.

Re: I hope your'e not tired of this stuff yet..........and more added..

hey thanks soill,
I think you are right
also the sioux consider the owl very very bad luck and the mandan hated the sioux
my wife is sioux and she won't let me keep these owls (which are mandan artifacts) in the house
