Since it's a quartz matrix, are you going to crush it to look for gold or other heavy minerals? The dark spots are either iron minerals or garnets.
 

Highly mineralized. Before crushing it I would have someone run over it with a very sensitive gold detector. It could have a nice vein of gold inside and have more value cut open as a specimen than crushed and panned for values.

Dissolve it in acid.... If there is a gold matrix it could be worth a fortune....
 

That's hilarious...I know nothing about gold and if I ran across that I'd throw it in the river as just another rock.
