Always nice to find a war nickel!

RE: Jefferson Nickels
I don't see the value in keeping low grade (g-f) 1940-1959 nickels (unless they are silver, error coins or 1950D).
Their current value is 5 cents and it hasn't risen over the last ten years.
I think, you are better off buying a single 1940s graded MS 65. It will apricate more those lower grade nickels.

Of course, to each his own.

Good to know M1hunter,
I started out just filling in my coin books...when I've looked up various nickels their value appears to be more than 5 cents...if the mintage is low...but I've been mistaken before...I may take your advice and cash in all my pulled nickels and get a good one. :)

Thanks for the input... :)

Different regions have different markets. When I left the asylum formerly known as Oregon, I could easily turn over full boxes of 1950-1959 Jeffs at $200, and full boxes of 1939-1949 at $300. 1938, 1950D, and War Nicks were dealt with separately.

Now that I live in the Republic of Texas, things are different. 1950-1959 full boxes now garner $300, and 1939-1949 boxes $400.

A few months back, when visiting family in North Carolina, I found the market for nicks was similar to what you have experienced.

Conclusion: Collectors are a fickle lot. What is popular one day is shunned the next.

Time for more coffee.

Thank you galenrog,
I appreciate your input...I also left the asylum of Washington state....sad to leave such a beautiful place so I can empathize.... the Oregon coast is amazing...I visited there on a regular basis...
Dumb question, but where is a good place to sell boxes of old nickels? I've been thinking about trying to sell them. I'm guessing online? My nickels are beginning to pile up. :)

I just put them up on Craigslist. My are plus two adjacent areas. When I have enough coins of all types flipped up that I do not want, I advertise an appointment only sale.

Will do the same thing when my Dansco Nickel Album is full. Seven holes to go for the last 24 boxes. 52 total for this hunt. Today’s take, 17 39-49, 17 50-59, 1 1925 Buff, 1 1943 S.

Nice haul! I love it when buffalos and war nickels pop up. I'll give craigslist a try. Thanks 👍

Nickels are probably my favorite as well. That is, if they are not 90% 2023-P like my last 14 or so boxes.:'(
Glad I'm not the only one that appreciates nickels. :). Did I understand correctly your last 14 boxes had no war nickels?

To be more clear, yesterday’s search was two boxes of nickels. The Buff and the War were in the second box. 12 keepers in first box, 24 in second.

I will continue 2 boxes a week whenever the CU has them. Also, no errors of any kind this year.

I actually think that I have found about four or five wars and no buffs in the last four weeks. Maybe next week will be better.

The nice thing about nickel roll hunting is that you are pretty much guaranteed to get a war or a buffalo nickel in the $100 boxes...it might take two boxes...but that's still better than what I get with dimes , quarters...the buffalos are really fun to get... especially if they have a noticeable date...

May you score many buffalos next week!

Ah, I see,
I haven't found any errors yet but I may not be looking close enough.... I've got my eye out for the Henning counterfeits...I also get my share Canadian/foreign coins...2 boxes a week is nice... I'm staggering my stops between two banks...the tellers get slightly bothered if I come in too much...
