Do you have your coil cable wrapped around the shaft or just hanging loose? If it is installed right your detector numbers can still bounce if you have multiple targets under the coil. I recommend you take a few coins of different denominations and lay them on the ground about a foot apart on some quiet ground. Go over each coin in a couple directions and take note of the tone the detector is emitting and the target ID numbers.

I agree with Loco Digger. Take some targets out to a grassy area and see what it tells you.
