A friend and I went out for a while Monday afternoon to a couple of field sites that date to mid 1800's. Our first stop netted part of what I believe is an old powder or shot flask. With no more finds in that location, we moved on to another site up the road. We didn't recover anything there as the cornstalks made hunting difficult at best..on to the next site! I have hunted this site numerous times in the last year without any coins being found, but lots of old pieces that indicated that we were in the right area. After about 20 minutes of hunting, I picked up a good signal, pinpointed, and dug it up. I found an old Schlitz beer token from an unknown establishment. I like tokens, so I was pretty happy! It only took a few more steps when I picked up a solid signal with a VDI above what is normally a silver quarter. Since I was using the Detech 13" coil, I was hoping it was just a small shift and I had a quarter in the hole. I pinpointed and started the plug. It took a little bit to break a solid chunk down to the piece holding my find, but my heart started racing when I saw a thick copper edge....sure enough, an 1847 large cent!! I'm pretty sure my hunting buddy wanted to kick me, as this was my second large cent that I've found while hunting with him, but he just shook his head!! We hit the area pretty hard for another hour, but that was it for the day. Ed did find the leg off of an old ceramic doll in a wash not far from where we were, so there has to be more goodies here that kids have dropped
