Hello. Before moving to Guam I did some research on the Lost Frenchman, easily looked up on the internet. I found a few references placing the mine in the vicinity of a place called "Tenhachape Pass". There were many trips to libraries throughout the southwest. Strangely enough, I was not able to find any places with this name on old maps or texts except when referencing the Lost Mine. I finally came across a letter to Mr. Ed Hansman, who was obviously looking for the mine also, from Roscoe G. Willson (Roscoe G. Willson went to Arizona in 1902 and worked at Crown King. He did some prospecting before joining the newly organized US. Forest Service in 1905. He put in 14 years with the forest service, resigning in 1919 to run sheep and work in oil fields. In 1924, Willson and his wife Maude opened the Arizona Specialty Company. He sold the business in 1945 to retire. He then he began writing for the Sunday edition of the Arizona Republic in 1947 and continued doing so until his death August 25, 1976 at the age of 97.) Mr. Willson was considered an expert on Arizona. Anyway, I'll quote the letter below dated Aug 21, 1954 and hopefully you or someone else can pick up where this research left off.
"Dear Mr. Hansman:
There may be such a pass as Tenhachape but the only ones I know of in that region are the Engasser Pass between the Kofa and Tank Mts., the Little Bighorn Pass between Cemetery Ridge and the Eagle Tails, and Castle Dome Pass between the Horse Tanks and the Castle Dome mine in the Castle Dome Mts.
Possibly some of these Passes had other names in the past. The Lost Frenchmen is a pure Will-O-The-Wisp.
Perhaps August Nord at Salome knows of the Tenhachape Pass. He has mined and run cattle there since 1905 or '06.
I have found several workings , old smelters, etc., said to have been done by the Frenchmen. One is east and the other south of Quartzsite.
Sincerely,
Roscoe G. Willson"
I hope this helps some....and if by chance this information helps you or someone else find something please let me know, just so I can know my research wasn't in vain ;) because it looks like I won't be able to get back out that way for quite some time :(
Happy Hunting!

Luis de Valdez died of liver cancer in April 1988- he took the location of six chests of gold coins to his grave. Dr. Donato Ibanez was the attending physician. Luis was an illegal who had crossed the border many times. It was on one of these trips he discovered the chests. He gave some gold coins to Dr. Ibanez before he died. Babbling incoherently, all the doctor could make out about the location was it was in a valley somewhere in AZ. (Presumably near the border) The doctor also made out the word "crimson". Several professional THers from both sides of the border have already scoured history books seeing if they could attribute this one or garner more clues.

I have no idea if it has been recovered or not. It has appeared in the Weekly World News, July 12, 1988 issue, and various Mexican newspapers about that same timeframe.

Good luck. :)

The Lost Frenchman has been written about many times. It is also called the Penhachape Mine and the Pen-Hach-A-Pe.

The oldest written reference I can find is found in John D. Mitchell's 1933 book, "Lost Mines of the Great Southwest." It is unknown if the information in his book is true. There are many other tales of Arizona in this book.

Hey Cook!! You just got a really EXCELLENT lead from Jethro, who btw is a walking encyclopedia on leads west of St. Louis! There are many, many lost treasures the SPANISH left behind that have never been documented in newspapers, too! I think it is in Seville Spain where the actual documentation in existence remains unread for centuries to this day!! I would suggest you learn about reading old carved treasure signs instead, and you can find your own leads out in the arizona desert wildernesses yourself. Hope this helps. steven.

Joe,

I have never heard of this mine, and I have never looked for a mine location, but I would think that it would be similar to finding a cache.
You allready have the name Stoker, the location is near the town of Yarnell , in Yavapai county AZ. You are probably not looking for land owned by Stoker, but a claim. I'm not familiar with claims either, but would guess there is a record of each claim filed. Find out where these records are for the city of Yarnell and or the claim records for Yavapai county. Start there and see what information can be learned. If this doesn't get you anywhere, talk to the local historical society in that area. The local library or county court house can be some of your best resources. One last thought, talk to the old timers there. They can sometimes be very helpfull.

Good luck cj! Keep us updated. I think it would be wild if you found an old lost mine that belonged to your family.

You may want to look at gypsyheart's posts. If I didn't already have my own, I think I could work some of her leads!
