Newbie needs help

I live in chesapeake Va not sure where I can detect . I just want to go somewhere to try out my new metal detector . I'll follow the metal detecting guide lines . I read so much in forums about the laws I'm scared to go anywhere. Can anyone help me out?

I'm new to the hobby, but I'm guessing that if you do not own whatever property it is, you need to get permission ahead of time, regardless if its a park, school, etc. It will be a few weeks before it warms up enough in my area to go on expeditions, so I've been researching the oldest areas of my town, and have been compiling a list of contacts to try and gain permission when it gets closer.
