Hello people, today I went metal detecting at a small park. Unfortunately, there were about 100 kids on the playgrounds so I mainly detected in the park's grass. I spent 2 hours and almost every signal I got was a zinc penny. Normally I would dig them but there were just tons and tons of them so I just decided to stick with higher signals.

I probably would have found much more, but all the good areas were super packed. Eventually, it was just too chaotic to do a decent hunt so I left 😐 Anyways here's what I got:

(sorry for bad quality)

Did the kids want to help you dig? That has happened to me before. They were all around me at a playground years ago. I told them that my detecting buddy "just found something REALLY COOL". They all went over to him then. He had some choice words for me. LOL.
Is that another quarter to the left of the shiny quarter?

Good assortment, is that a silver ring on the right top row?

How did you know!? lol, the kids at the park were very interested in what I was doing and I had about 5-6 kids following me around for the last bit of the hunt. One kid picked up my shovel and one kid was trying to reach for my pinpointer. (I didn't mind them watching but I don't like it when they get touchy) Luckily I got out of there alive. This is definitely why I prefer hunting empty parks 😂😂😂

Lmao! I can just picture that. lol.
I need to remember to bring a creepy horror mask with me next time I detect a play area. 🤣

Yeah, the vast bulk of coins I find in any given place are pennies. My speculation is that pennies get lost with far greater frequency than other types of coin, the brown patina makes them hard to spot in the dirt. In terms of age I typically find from the mid 60s to the 80s in many places. I dig em up, set aside any rares, toss the ones in super rough shape and the rest are being saved up for a trip to the coinstar lol.

Zinc Pennie’s seem to corrode in a few years in certain soil, only copper, silver maintains a nice appearance in the dirt.

Yes sir, I believe before I die, coinage might be know longer, all coins add up, I buy accessories with the change over the year. When did they start including more zinc instead of copper, gee the government claims it cost to much to produce coins, so even the dreaded zinc penny might be a rarity someday, Thanks

I've found pennies only a year old in hella rough shape. Modern pennies rot out very fast in the soil at least around here.

If it's a rarity It'll be because the zincolns all corroded away just a few years after minting. Leaves little to be found beyond a nondescript copper disc without meaningful features and the edges eaten away. I should bury a fresh zincoln and see what it comes back up looking like a year later lol.
I've literally had brand new pennies found on the surface crumble apart in my fingers with modest tension. All crumbly and rotten

Interesting hobby, you learn so much, I detect most in my area of western Pennsylvani, sure the guys from the 60s and 70s probably had a field day meaning they didn’t have to dig deep to find even silver dimes etc. now with better technology it allows to separate and go deeper. In all reality nobody is replenishing the ground with the good old stuff so thats the story I guess

Those coins weren't as rare or valuable back in the day so things like that were likely taken for granted and even spent in some cases. In 1960 a 1940s dime isn't anything special, it's the equivalent of finding 70s what have you today. It doesn't seem very important in the moment but give it another 40+ years and then the story changes. Today's drop is tomorrow's archaeology, always. The past is always increasingly rare as temporal distance increases and so value likewise increases. The good old stuff is being lost as we speak, I run it out to the dumpster two to three times a week honestly, that's why dumping sites are where I like to hit best, that's where most of the good old stuff went and that includes coins. Save all the klink-y you find, it all has value even if it's only one stinkin cent, they add up especially if you hunt around with frequency

Yes, always something replaces something, the silver coins are getting harder to find , they don’t make them anymore at least prior to 1964 when they where what 90% or so meta speaking, relics are great also. A hobby that requires patience but I enjoy it thanks

I hate it when this happens, you have to be nice to kids, but they sure drive me mad. I almost yell hallelujah when their parents come and take them away from "that weird stranger". I have had a dozen kids around me before, and they are so bold as to attempt to dig my holes for me and pick out places to dig where they think that there might be something. They always seem to think that there are cars(real full sized cars) and gold coins under the ground everywhere. I definitely prefer empty areas.
