You Know It's Hot When...

Your tires separate...and they're not even moving.

Me and a friend took my boat to a nearby lake to do some shoreline and shallow water hunting. This particular spot is easier to access by boat than to hike down the cliffs above it. In the late 20's to early 30's a gambling barge had been moored here and a lot of tokens and some old coins have come from this place. With the lake down we can get a little further out and I wanted to find a few more of the gaming tokens. I ended up finding one and a wheat cent along with some clad and a junk watch. We didn't last long in the 106 degree heat. I get back to the boat ramp and start walking towards my truck. It was parked in the full sun on a blacktop parking lot. There's no shade at this boat ramp. When I get close I hear what sounds like squirrels running up a tree or bacon sizzling in a skillet. It was coming from the boat trailer so I ease over to take a look and see the tread separating on my tire right before my eyes.

So I'm thinking, back it into the cool water to stop this nonsense...Didn't really work out like I expected...I guess the shock of the sudden temp change made it worse. We go ahead and put the spare on, pull the boat and get a 1/4 mile down the road and the spare comes apart and blows out...Now what? With a little luck and a cordless sawzall we saw off the excess rubber on the bad tire, which is still holding air, put it back on and limp home on the steel belts...:laughing7:

Thanks Sled. I had only heard of it happening...old tires and hot streets, but this was a first for me. It was kinda eerie looking, like the tire was alive.

"and see the tread separating on my tire right before my eyes."

Yeah kind of like the the movie aliens when the alien pods start opening up...

Ok maybe not :laughing7:

Ive never seen that before. Maybe next time bring some water to wet them tires before you go and on the way.

Good finds and you are really lucky it didn't happen while you we're running down the road!

LOL...I tried Rock. I really thought backing into the lake would stop it...but that's when the tread broke in half.

Luck really was with us today. I normally use a boat ramp closer to the house but a local fishing club held a tournament there today. I knew that ramp would be packed so I used one farther away. The close ramp is on the highway whereas the farther ramp is on the back roads. The spare would have blown at highway speeds but on the back roads we were only going thirty. Even more ironic was that fact that the spare had been flat for over a year and I decided to air it up before we left today....but little good that did. lol

Thank god you didn't have fiberglass fenders! Had a tire let go like that on a Baja. Don't know what was scarier the sound of the thing flapping at 65mph or watching the fender explode in the rearview!

better start doing some heavy duty detecting to find enough clad for a new set of tires
