Relic Hunting
Got up early and went to a park where we have been finding wheats, silver and several CW relics. When I got there I was shocked to see several dug pull tabs laying on the ground and holes everywhere. I know there are other hunters that live in this area although it is a fairly long drive for me. I tried to repair the best I could but the dirt was dry and scattered. I was furious. Not because they were hunting an area we have been having good luck at but because of the disrespect to the park. I even scanned some holes they dug and they left the trash in the holes. I went to another part of the park and dug a few targets. Then this young boy was following me. He was not getting in my way but more just curious. So asked him if he would like to try it. Boy his face lit up. I unplugged the head phones so I could listen. Then he got a good dime signal. He was right there helping look for it. It was a 1940-s Mercury dime. Not the best of shape but still silver. His mother showed up and he was so excited. He showed to his mother and she handed it back to me. I said no. He found it he keeps it and I handed it back to him. Man I wish I had my camera with me. I later found out he was out of school because of a death in the family. So my day started out in anger because of previous hunters stupidity and ended with the most joyous encounter I have had in a long time.

What a nice guy you are! I usually find kids pretty annoying, but what you did was special. Another kharma point for you!!

It's ashame when people disrespect the sacred hunting grounds (parks). >:(
But I'm glad to see you brought some joy to a possible future generation of MDer. :icon_sunny:

Randy, you provided a nice distraction for a young man who was having a hard time today. My hat's off to you. You may have kindled an interest in the young man and he may develop into a Master Relic Hunter like Guy or 4-H-LOL. As to the buttheads who left open holes and left trash in the holes, there are jerks in every hobby. Good Job, Quindy.

Re: You found it . . .

Thanks, I needed the inspiration. I met a pair of a*sholes just like the one at your park. Scruffy dudes (not that I'm GQ on a hunt). I was already hunting when they pulled up. Not particularly friendly for TH'ers. One had an MX6, the other had something neither White's nor Garrett's. I gave them their distance while hunting. After they left I happened to cross a path one of them was taking. Holes unfilled, trash left on the ground. I share your fury. You got to share your hobby with someone who needed distraction, I got a large cent (1840's) that one of them apparently thought was a rusty bottle cap. :laughing9: I'm watching for you, you scoundrels!

That's a cool story! That kid will never forget what you did for him! I bet he'll be out there with his own detector in the near future!

The first time I seen someone detecting in a park when I was 8 years old ~ I watched the guy dig coin after coin ~ I thought it was so cool! I knew I'd someday be doing that myself, but I didn't buy my own detector until I was about 21 years old. The rest is history!

You rock !

How does the saying go: A man never stands so tall as when he bends to help a child. :)

Got to love getting the next generation of hunter started. Hope the gopher is on here and takes note of their poor recoveries and steps up to take the trash out and leave the ground as you found it. If you don't, not only will you dig those same pull tabs over and over, but eventually all the parks will be off limits for everyone.

Thanks for sharing.

Great story....I hope kharma presents you with a nice Confederate button....but the real prize is the difference you made for another human being. Happy hunting!
