While American Allied forces occupied Japan during the period 1945 -1952 ,Japan mass produced pottery for export because they needed hard money.
Any pottery marked like yours was exported during this time.

And it USED to be collectible. Don't know if it still is. My father collected a LOT of it before he passed but that was in 1987.

Do a Google or eBay search on "tomato ware" and you should get some good hits.

Katy Anderson has a great site for Made in Occupied ceramics .
As you scan her pics of marks, you'll see one with a 'circle K', somewhat similar to yours--but not a 'bullseye hit'.
You may wish to contact Kathy at: cathy@the4cs.com .
Here's her home page: http://www.the4cs.com/~cathy/

It was a marketing ploy. It stopped people feeling guilty about buying from the enemy.

Back then if anything was marked 'made in japan" then it was junk and often would crumble in your hands... but somewhere along the timeline the quality of the Japanese production zoomed from the lowest possible to the highest.

that is sort of like seeing the pesky girl next door suddenly becoming a beauty literally overnight and you wonder if perhaps it was you that has been changing all along.

I agree that the word "occupied" help shift the perception from being the enemy to becoming the trading partner. Thanks for your comment on that.

:'(

I sense that soon the nations of Africa will be our main supplier of inexpensive items and will easily exceed the trade level that we have with China.
