Hello.
It all started with a radioshack detector and the Buzzard with my mom driving me all over the Owyhees when I was 8yo.
Now I'm getting my kids into panning and detecting. I have the Ace 150, pans, buckets, shovels, snuffer, a pickaxe I just restored and I just ordered the 'Hog Pan' + a 79 F150 4x4 with lots of clearance!
We go camping in the desert and canyons every other week ("adults" only) and we found a spot that was producing colour in every pan, just pans. So the idea was to use the Hog Pan to move lots of material and take it home in buckets next time (hope it gets here on time). The pickaxe I picked up for $5 at a 2nd hand store, she was in bad shape but I made her good and useable again. I think we can chop down some depths quick with it and hog pan it quick. We get lots of black sand but is it weird to be annoyed that there are tons of gems the size of black sand so colors are all kinds of shiny! haha. Probably what I'll do is add 1/4 mesh over the existing hog pan grizzly due to keeping out even more bigger stuff.
We also find tons and tons of quartz, crystals and rocks. Would love to have a rock crusher!
Here are some before/after shots of the pick. Someone tried to fix it with nails! The head wasn't going to stay on as the handle was too dried out.
Anyone around the Owyhees?
