Hello! My name is Sharon...

I am completely new to the metal detecting world....so new that I haven't even purchased one yet! I am fascinated by the idea of finding things and have yet to decide what specifically I would like to find... I've been reading different articles and so I decided to join this forum in hopes of learning some more about this hobby. I almost purchased one today but decided to wait and do some more research first. I look forward to corresponding with many of you and hopefully make a few new friends too.

A few questions I have:

Are metal detectors typically the same size? Are some heavier than others?

Are there any particular models I should look into?

Do you have any general tips?

Thanks in advanced!

:hello: Hi Sharon, welcome to THE best website ever for all your trasure hunting needs and wants! And welcome to a great hobby, once you do it, you will be hooked for life! I just got my first machine yesterday, it is a White's Coinmaster Pro, it only weighs 2.5 pounds, and uses 2 nine volt batteries. My husband Chug has a White's Classic ID, it weighs about 5 to 6 pounds, so yes they come in different weights, and it depends where and what you want to hunt, we both like parks, tot lots and the beach, so we have detectors for those places, eventually Chug wants another machine, a water one this time, and when he gets it, we will go through Mike here, at AA Woodland Dectectors can help you, he is super nice and easy to talk to and work with! I wish I could tell you more, I'm still learning myself! If you have any other questions, there is always someone here to help, 99% of the people here are great!!!! :laughing7: Red :hello:

Thank you for the response Red! I will definitely take a look into the White's Coinmaster Pro... Do you know of any other models I should look into? I like the sound of using a lighter metal detector however...I don't want to sacrifice any important features as well... there is so much information here... I don't know where to start!!! =)

I'll try, I'm still learning myself, there are alot of detectors out there, we have seen them from $99.00 for a real cheap one on up to several thousands of dollars. The one I have is light enough for me to use while also using my cane, I have health issues so that was important to me. With it I can do tot lots, can't wait! Parks, and sand, I hope (That's where we find all those cool cars LOL) we dig all signals, once you learn your machine, then you can set it to discriminate, which means it will tell you what kind of metal you have found. So hopefully you can get idea's from other people on what to buy.
Next you need to learn to dig plugs, that is to make a semi circle and make sure it is still attached to the grass and such, once your done with the hole, you will be filling it back up and closing the plug, if you dig a hole completely, the grass won't grow back, then people sometimes get nasty, cause of the holes, and don't forget to bring something to put your finds and junk in, so when people ask if you found anything, and they will, trust me! You can show them all the trash! Don't get discouraged if you don't find anything, you'll have days like that. Another thing that helps, is watch where people sit and play, things get lost so fast it isn't funny, for them! LOL
I know there is a bunch more, ok people, Sharon needs some advice!!!! Take care, hope I could help you some. Red :hello:
