Probably the last field hunt of spring for me, everything is planted in my area…
Had a decent hunt to end the season.
Looking for opinions on what the claw may have been from? From northern Ohio, as far as I am aware of, there isn’t any animals nowadays(bear?) that would have a claw this big.
Thanks for any input !!!

Nice finds for sure !1 When trying to identify something when taking a picture of it with something we can relate to as to size like maybe a dime or quarter. Thanks for sharing

I thought with it laying in my hand that would be sufficient for sizing , about three fingers long, or a little less than 3” long. Thanks

I agree with the others that your find there is a tooth as opposed to being a claw. It has a root as opposed to attachments for ligaments. The size rules out many possible animals. I am going to include pictures of bear and boar teeth with this post. I think it is most likely from a bear. I also think that the groove which runs perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth is man made, suggesting it my have been used as a personal adornment.

That bell is great; looks old too. I have never found a larger one like that intact. Congrats!
Thanks! It’s the biggest complete bell I have recovered, plenty of whole ones of smaller varieties, only got half of one that’s bigger. Site is early 1800s, gone by 1894. It’s a dig every signal site, no aluminum. I also recovered some ihps and a hard times token but did not take any pictures to share yet.

My thoughts also, looks grooved by man to me too. Context of the find, I was walking the high hills near an old waterway and spotted the tooth laying on the surface, my initial thoughts was Native American but I hate jumping to that conclusion right away because anything Native American made of bone is rare in my area….not many caves/rock shelters in my area
