Yesterday's oxen on my road

Hi, I had a few minutes yesterday morning so I hit a spot on my road that has given me lots of buttons. I had about an hour and decided that I would dig all iron signals. Well to my surprise this place is loaded with oxen shoes. This was all fields in it's day. I found the smallest oxen shoe to date. I did a preservation on it and it came out really nice. I also found a nice thimble. Did they make them out of brass? This one rang up as brass and has a patina on it. Thanks for looking.

Re: Yesterday's oxen on my road

Good Gawd, that's a great collection of ox shoes...and from just one day's hunt!!! WOW!!! Thimbles were made from a variety of material: gold, silver, tin, aluminum, plastic, brass, pewter (?, not sure of that one). Now if it were copper, I'd guess that it had been silver plated originally. I have yet to find my first ox shoe. I'm always hoping.

Nice finds...Treasuretales...I have about 100 ox shoes in my "collection". Give me your address and I'll send you one! They are very (too) common on my hunts!

Thanks for the nice reply TreasureTales. I never know thimbles were made of so many different materials. I have been trying to figure out this spot. There is NO cellar hole nearby but I have found buttons, the thimble, broken spoon and all those oxen shoes. I stopped digging up the iron signals after about 45 minutes of finding those shoes. I do know that this area was fields so I'm guessing that this was an active field in it's day. I am still trying to piece together where these buttons and thimble came from. I keep going back hoping for a lost coin.

Look for the old fields and you will find oxen shoes sooner or later. In NH the oxen plowed fields and also they would roll the snow towing big rollers behind the oxen. They did not plow all of it like they do today so oxen were a big part of our history. What part of the country do you hunt?

Nice finds, I also find many ox shoes, so many I toss them into the recycling bin these days. HH, Mike

Say it ain't so. Those are pieces of history. Sheeesh, you guys are killing me with your abundance of ox shoes.

enhh, I hunt in the Western States. Not much early day plowing around where I usually go...lumber camps and mining towns. Lumber camps did use oxen before narrow gauge railways came into being, but many of the old camps have been fenced off by the forest service or are on private and therefore inaccessible property. I'll find one someday, I'm determined to do so!!!!!

Re: Yesterday's oxen on my road

Lets all plant our extra ox shoes in Treasure Tales front yard some night and then send him a map pinpointing his yard as a site where a bank robber buried his stolen loot! :D
