Yesterday's finds from old timberframed cabin, 1916 Merc, buckle....

Hey you all, yesterday was a beautiful day here in the mountain state, tons of sunshine and a high of about 50. Headed off to an old cabin site that I had hunted before with a little luck (wheatie, buffalo). Arrived at the site at about noon and hunted till four, Finds were few and far between but I did manage to pull this terribly worn 1916 Merc out of the dirt next to the well at the site, it has a mintmark but you can't see it well, looks like its an S. Were the mintmarks on the 1916's in a slightly different position than on the 1917's and after? This mintmark is pretty high as can be seen on the reverse in the picture. That was the only coin that I found, although I did get this small valve and buckle. Also found 3 unbroken white glass jar lid seals, people will buy these on ebay if in good condition. Got bored of not finding much after 4 hours and the owners came by. I didn't want to get in their way so I decided to call it a day. Weather is just as good today so I'll probably head out again.....just wish I knew where. Thanks for looking and HH

Nice Cabin...That little spigot looks like the type that were used in earthenware or stoneware jugs.....Artists and crafters buy the canning jar glass lids ....nice silver also....hope you can get back there...might be a bottle dump to explore!

Nice hunt and congrats on the silver! Too bad it isn't a 1916 D, they're worth some $$$, nice ones are worth several thousands. HH, Mike

Haven't been at it for very long, I started last July, and got my Prizm III at the end of last Sept...I go every chance I get though, thanks for the info on the micro S, I'm sure that is what it is...I saw a pic of an S on a 1917 merc and it was larger and lower on the coin.

Hey Angelo,
Is that Mercury dime you posted the front and back of the same coin?
If it is, you have a very rare dime there.

Neverdone,

Great find with the silver, I've been at it for 2 months now and still no silver. I have found 2 Indian heads and alot of newer clad. The porcelain jar lids could be worth a few bucks each, maybe more. I've only found one complete ( Boyd's #2). I've discovered that the old glass is sometimes more valuable than the old coins.

May luck be with you,
Smartin

Re: Yesterday's finds from old timberframed cabin, 1916 Merc, buckle....

smartin, I have found a few silver coins in my short detecting career, a 1916 merc, 1917 merc, 1953D rosie, and a 1943D nickel. Still haven't managed to find any indians yet tho, sure wish I would. Been savind all of the porcelain jar lids that I dig up complete, I have 3 white ones with no name, 2 white mason's, one powder blue White Crown Cap, one powder blue boyd's and one white boyd's....gonna save em up a little more and try to sell them on ebay to put towards a DFX or EX2 one day....still got a long way to go though, haven't been finding any clad in a long time since I've been hunting old sites only here recently.

Congrat on the coin, silver is always nice.
