Yesterday's Colonial Digs
My buddy Tom and I set out yesterday with a plan. We had done some map overlays of old county atlases trying to locate an old town site in a nearby county. Our Plan B was an old iron furnace nearby that we had been to once before. When we got to the area of the suspected town site, it was raining and all the underbrush was wet. We decided to try it another day when the leaves are off the trees. We headed for our Plan B, an iron furnace that was built in 1807. When we pulled onto the dirt road that lead to our iron furnace, we found that it now led into a giant strip mine with no outlet. We had to come up with a Plan C and decided on another iron furnace about 30 miles away that we had done well at before, but had hunted it hard. This iron furnace was built in 1794. We thought with our F75's we might find some things we had missed before.
I did OK for about 2 hours hunting at this spot. My second signal was a King George II. I then dug a flat tombac and a KG III within the next 20 minutes. Things slowed down after that, but still ended up with a couple decent buttons and a couple ugly coppers. The coppers sure looked good when I flipped the plugs and saw them laying in the dirt - LOL. That has been my luck so far this year - of the 9 large coppers I've dug, only four of them were identifiable, and none of them had readable dates.
