Yesterday's Colonial Digs

My buddy Tom and I set out yesterday with a plan. We had done some map overlays of old county atlases trying to locate an old town site in a nearby county. Our Plan B was an old iron furnace nearby that we had been to once before. When we got to the area of the suspected town site, it was raining and all the underbrush was wet. We decided to try it another day when the leaves are off the trees. We headed for our Plan B, an iron furnace that was built in 1807. When we pulled onto the dirt road that lead to our iron furnace, we found that it now led into a giant strip mine with no outlet. We had to come up with a Plan C and decided on another iron furnace about 30 miles away that we had done well at before, but had hunted it hard. This iron furnace was built in 1794. We thought with our F75's we might find some things we had missed before.

I did OK for about 2 hours hunting at this spot. My second signal was a King George II. I then dug a flat tombac and a KG III within the next 20 minutes. Things slowed down after that, but still ended up with a couple decent buttons and a couple ugly coppers. The coppers sure looked good when I flipped the plugs and saw them laying in the dirt - LOL. That has been my luck so far this year - of the 9 large coppers I've dug, only four of them were identifiable, and none of them had readable dates.

Well, plan C paid off! Any good day hunting is better than no day hunting! Nice Finds.
Where I live it seems all my good old roads are leading to some sort of private property!:BangHead:

Nice finds. What was it like hunting in all that slag & iron?

Nice day at the colonial site :headbang:.. sure do miss finding the colonial relics

We were hunting where we think the iron masters house stood. There was still a lot of iron in the ground. They obviously made iron cooking pots here among other things. The bigger iron sounds good and gives good numbers, but if you are still getting a good signal with your coil a foot off the ground it's probably not worth digging. We found one signal that was still reading loud and clear with the coil 5 feet off the ground. Out of four iron furnaces I've hunted, this is the only one that ever paid off. Here is some stuff we dug here in 2005.

That it is one generous site you've got there. Way to find the treasure among the iron.

Steve I did not know that area had that kind of history. Very nice. My wife and kids went up for two weeks to Cannonsberg for a visit but I had to stay behind and work. I may get up there next month. If I do I will shoot ya a PM.

Nice to see your getting out and digging some of those sweet lookin' PA coins and relics .

Alright, Steve! That is the way you get your dig-on. I am getting pumped for some good relic hunting. The coppers add to your collection and the buttons are just icing on that cake. Alright!

Haha! Yes Quindy I'm alive, but not hunting much. It's been a hot, dry summer. I've got some ideas for the fall-winter-spring. I hope they pan out. Good luck to you and your partners this upcoming season.

If I could only dig two things it would large coppers and buttons. Nice finds.

Good late summer hunt, nice when a backup to a backup site pans out for you. The previous finds (state coppers) and yout last hunt finds seem to fit the bill of a site from the 1790s. Most of the state coppers I have found have come from sites from that time frame more so than say after 1820 or so.

Some quality colonial digs there Steve. Glad you are getting out. Hope to see you in VA this spring.

The coppers might not be crisp, but they do scream of our history as a nation! Great finds Steve, I love the colonial relics & coins you guys find back there!! I hope the vegetation dries up for you so we can see how plan A turns out!!! I always have enjoyed your posts over the years!!!!
