Yesterday's Colonial Bonanza buttons, silver, and diamond?
So a disclaimer - I doubt the stone is a diamond but man if it were I would be happy!
Yesterday my good pal Bill D and I got together again to hit our latest colonial site. This is part of a site that I had waited over a year to get into and proved quite productive a month back – just as we were finished (so we thought) we hit another area at the end of our last hunt and uncovered a new site. We only had 45 minutes the last time so I was looking forward to a prolonged stay this time.
As Bill mentioned already, only one coin was dug for the day but I did strike silver twice. He set the tone for the coin and as hard as I tried, I could not unearth one. We did (as Bill said) get into some pits with one providing a quick energy jolt – but it was not long before I was back to surface finds. I had been digging iffy targets all day and was being really successful in iron patches plucking out these little guys. I stayed with it, button after button hoping that a piece of cut silver or other colonial coin would surface – not the case. What did surface were probably my two best finds of the day – the solid silver cufflink with a tudor rose engraved on the face (the link remaining) and another solid silver with a large very clear stone (assuming it is glass, but might get this one checked out). There are no scratches, chips, or fog which leads me to question if it is a glass stone as after being in the ground for 250 years I would assume it would see some ware.
I did wonder into the woods for a bit and dig a complete (partially bent) shoe buckle (also adorning tudor roses). My take for the day was 36 buttons! Various size musket balls, misc. pieces of lead and other colonial do-dads!
Can’t wait to get back – I am heading to PA for a week for work (leave this afternoon) and snow will be covering all the way down here stay warm everyone!
