All 4 kiddos wanted to go on an artifact hunt yesterday. We got lucky and had a lot of action. Bethany found what I guess is a preform 2 minutes after we started. I saw her standing still, staring down. We all took a few steps toward her and she said, "I saw it first." Can't tell if it's a slate material or what. Not like our more common local chert. It's the first artifact she ever spotted on her own. My 7 yr old Henry also found his first ever one on his own. His older brother thinks it might be a hardin. It has sharp serrations. Everyone had a blast. 2 hours well spent. Thanks for looking.

Priceless, they will never forget that day!

I like it as a finished piece. There’s some detailed flaking going on there that says these edges mean business. I’m not familiar with other preforms in that area so that’s just my best guess.

I see secondary flaking on both sides of that big blade. Good eye Bethany!! I’m not sure I’ve ever beaten two minutes.
Don’t think it’s slate. Maybe a fine grained Rhyolite. But the locals can tell you.

Congratulations to you all.

Thanks for sharing this very nice day with us..It’s a moment in time that the family will always remember

Really appreciate the nice things said, as do the kids... they like reading and hearing all the nice comments. Sunday we couldn't artifact hunt because I needed the service of my older three. We picked rocks from a field, and definitely had a possibility to find something while we were doing it, but nothing surfaced. Monday night we went crappie fishing and got a meals worth. Today was dad's turn for a lucky accidental find, and I'll just add it to this thread rather than start a new one. I was hoeing volunteer corn out of a corn on corn field, several miles away from our creek, out on the prairie. Rarely if ever has an arrowhead been found at this place. Again, not good with identification, but it seems like a pink quartz scraper or knife type tool to me. Our family doesn't have anything like it. Later in the day, after recruiting kids to pick more rocks, we made a quick hunt and found a broken piece with nice sharp edges. We dug with a rock a few feet in each direction looking for the front half. I'm sure it's close but so far away. Thanks for looking!

I too think the big piece could be a finished piece? Working, learning and spending time with Dad!! All of you are winners!!
