These guys were known heroin addicts. Depression is a big side effect of withdrawals. Eric Clapton smiles when Lennon says “Feel so suicidal, even hate my rock and roll.” I suspect he has been there, but not in this video, they are using.

I had surgery and was on opioids for six weeks. I felt the withdrawals depression. They have meds for the physical side but not much for the psychological—this is according to my physical therapist. He said the hard addicts never really get over it.
