Me and my buddy Rob hit the old woods again today for 3 1/2 hours. I know it sounds hard to believe, but we actually hunted a section of these woods I had not searched before. Right off the bat I found a 1781 Spanish Reale that had been converted to a button (shank is missing) and Rob found an A.M. Peasley Boston, War Of 1812, US Navy button in extremely fine condition (the photo doesn't do it justice). Later on I came up with an 1821 Large Cent. We both also found several early flat buttons and I found a very old, small copper coin (slightly smaller than a dime) that is worn smooth. Also pictured is an 1837 "I follow in the steps of my illustrious predecessor" Hard Times Token found by Rob on Tuesday in the general area where I found the 1829 Capped Bust Half Dime. Needless to say, none of the items have been cleaned and if they clean up well I will post more pictures.

P.S. I'm not sure if the Reale is a 1 Reale or a 1/2 Reale. It's just about the same size as a dime. If anybody knows what denomination it is, please let me know.

Re: Ho-Hum The Woods Again 1781 Reale Button 1821 Large Cent C1812 Navy Button

Those are great. I found a reale and it was about that size, little larger than a half dime. I believe it was a 1 reale. Are you hunting an old camp or something or hitting some woods at random. Would like to find something like that around here.

I've been hitting these woods since last summer. Below is a list of keepers (including today's finds) I've found there:

1738 King George II Colonial Copper
1778 Spanish 1 Reale
1781 Spanish 1 or 1/2 Reale
1780s Nova Constellatio Copper
1803 Kettle Replica or Game Marker Coin
1821 Large Cent
1829 Capped Bust Half Dime
1837 Hard Times Token (Found By Rob)
1841 Seated Liberty Dime
1842 Large Cent
1852 Silver Three Cents Piece
1863 Indian Head Penny
1864 Counterfeit California Gold Dollar Coin
1894 Barber Quarter
1897 Barber Dime
1902 Barber Dime
1905-S Barber Dime
1920 Buffalo Nickel
1920 Walking Liberty Half Dollar (Found By Rob)
1937 Mercury Dime
1952 Washington Quarter
Four or Five Other Indian Head Pennies (Can't Remember The Dates) And A Few Wheat Cents.

Also In The Keeper Case:
Very Worn Colonial Copper Probably William III (1650-1702)
Very Corroded King George II Colonial Copper
C1812 US Navy Button In Extremely Fine Condiiton (Found By Rob)
C1820-1830 US Navy Button In Extremely Fine Condition
C1900 Admiral Dewey "Welcome Our Hero" Souvenir Medal
C1920 Knights Templar Medal From Syracuse New York
C1937 Speed Gibson's Flying Police Tin Badge (Radio Premium Missing Back Pin)

Note: I want to point out the reason I have found so more than Rob, is because I have hunted these woods on at least 40 different occasions, whereas Rob has only hunted them a few times.

that is quite an impressive list. had a good site once that was giving up the real, reale old stuff but they asked me to stop. would like to go back to it someday. About the woods and its history. What drew you to the area you are hunting? I may be missing out on something in my own area.

Great finds. Love that Navy button. The woods are good. Looks like a half reale to me. A one reale piece is about the size of a U.S. nickel, though not nearly as thick. Happy hunting in your woods.

Well, it's a pretty long story, but I'll briefly explain. I'm on Long Island which was settled around 1640 and has always had an above average population relative to other places. Two and a half years ago when I started detecting, I hunted a parcel of woods, where years earlier Rob had found some old coins, including a Draped Bust Large Cent. One of the first places I went to detect was that parcel, and I wound up finding an 1807 Draped Bust Large Cent in nice condition. Then on March 23, 2006, I hunted a small woods and found an 1825 George IV Gold Sovereign (open up the banner of recent treasures found at top of page, and my coin is in the second row from the bottom. If you live in an old area and you have woods that are on old roads, chances are people were in those woods many, many years ago, either as hunters or farmers or kids playing, and they dropped things. I am almost positve the woods I am now hunting was originally farmland. Also, by the way, these woods are only five minutes away from the old book and antique shop I own. So that is why I have been able to hunt them so much.

Wow, you have found some mighty impressive coins, since you started hunting. Your recent finds are awesome also. Really like the navy button.

I found a War of 1812 Silver plated Officers Button, in Excellent condition last year. I found it here in Ohio.

Thanks for your post, can't wait to see your finds for this year.
