Got these yesterday. Small ones range from pale yellow to gold. Large one 7 x 3 has some smoky but the rest?

almost all the yellow ones are clear or translucent. They haven't even been washed yet.

Citrine?

Pale smokies are often like that shaman, the base clear quartz is altered by radiation to darken forming smokies. The darker the smokie the more radiation its received over time from its nearby source, the further away from that source the lighter the darkening will be. Almost citrine in color. If they clean up well and you polish them you'll likely get some nice stones. The rock itself is massive quartz :)

Citrine is yellow and coloured by iron. Smokey is brownish and the colour is from irradiation.

I guess what I'm asking is why couldn't this be citrine, color is right. We have iron all over the place and old iron furnaces around here. And the two don't seem to occur together. The smoky doesn't occur in the same area as the yellow.
