I found this old bottle in a creek that runs threw some pretty old farms. I was detecting there last spring. One of my first hunts. I was using a real piece of crap bounty hunter machine Holly had bought. And gave it a go.
I detected down along the creek in the bracket. I got a beep. And i dug, and I dug. Til I was a foot down. And a foot across. Never did locate the metal item. But, as I dug, this bottle showed up. Totally brown and full of creek stink. I took it with me cuz I didn't want to toss it and feel like I was re-littering.
It almost found itself in the trash bin. Then I realized, it was a pretty thick bottle. And had markings on the bottom.
Now, i have no clue how old it is. Or what it could have been from. I know some people like to go bottle hunting at old dumps, flea markets ext. Anyone seen one like this?
Its pretty basic. But you can see how thick the glass is. Be interesting to finally discover what on earth I have been hanging onto.
Its been totally cleaned. And went back and I have long since found an old thick copper screw top that fits it well. My guess is thats its top and the metal target. So, I just keep it around. Filled it full of merc dimes once. They just barley fit. Then, copper nuggets. But. Nothing ever looked right in it. So it just sits in the mystery self.
Probably why it was empty and pitched.

UPDATE: I silver plated the thick copper screw top I found in the spot I found the bottle when I went back to re search the spot with a better machine. the top I assume was its top since it fit. though, it was cracked. Looks pretty cool now with a silver plated top. makes a neat little bottle.

Hey there IHPT, if I remember right the screw top dates it to the early 1900's or there abouts, that's when they invented the screw top machine to make them, it does not look like a rare one but I am no bottle expert either, maybe post it in the bottle section and see what they say, luck to you and HH!

if it's big enough to hold merc dimes, it could have held real mercury, bottle would have to be really thick glass to prevent easy breakage, jmho.........NGE

It not an old bottle. Its a screw top ABM with no embossments on the sides. Its the shape to hold mouthwash and resembles the Listerines without the embossing..

Listerines with a copper top? Smaller than a pop can? What is ABM, and what is embossments? I remember listerine bottles when i was a kid. They were kind of bubbled on the top and bottom. How long has it been around?

Personally. My gut tells me its not a listerine bottle anyway. Not even close. But. I will look into it anyway. Thanks.

Listerine has been around a lot longer than your bottle lol. Yes they were smaller than a pop can. What I mean is that your bottle has the shape of an old Listerine mouthwash bottle but without the embossments (letters). Your bottle had a label. ABM is automatic bottle machine. What copper top? I missed that sorry. Can you post a pic of the screwcap? Your bottle is ABM type, has modern threaded top, no embossments and is not very old sorry. A common bottle shape, without any embossments, are generally not considered desirable by collectors. What makes you think its old? :icon_scratch: What do you think were the contents? :icon_scratch:

ha! wow that is close. you aint kiddin. but yeah, not the same bottle. The cap is in the picture keeping the bottle from rolling off the table. I silver plated it yesterday though. So it looked nice. It was found in the same spot, but after I went back. It could belong to the bottle. because it does fit. or, its from another. I never said the bottle was old. I thought it might be. And was wondering. Because I dug it in a creek bed in a park behind my house. Where an old old farm house and hazel nut orchard once existed. you can even google earth it, and go back in time a couple years and see the old orchard where my house now stands. It was all once private land.
Anyway, so. Where did you read the ABM marking on my bottle? And how can you tell by those markings on the bottom? Do you know what they mean? The glass is extremely thick. And the thread on the top looks average I agree. but, it is odd. The grooves are thick, and arnt 100% totally straight as they curl around the top. but, that could be wear? I dunno. I dont care if its old, or worth 5 cents for deposit. I just like to find out what stuff is. And I have not been able to id this bottle.
Gotcha on the embossment. I have other old bottles with that on them. Now I feel stupid. haha. I knew that.
Anyway. I really dont know what it could have held. if its newer. Probably something that may have been toxic? because the glass is so thick....its got me stumped. Also, if you look carefully. The bottles glass, almost spirals. Wish i could show it to you in person. Im to damn curious. I wish it had some embossment to indicate what the heck it is. Could have been a medicine bottle? A bottle of mercury? or an asian bottle of saki for all I know.
When I dug it. it was yellow. totally full of dirt. just packed solid. and reaked of swamp slime. There was no indication at the time it had any sort of paper label either. But, again. could have just rotted away.
Also, my last note is. I have a few old bottles that have the same type of screw tops. And I know they are old. turn of the century old. How can you tell age from a screw top bottle?

I apologize that no other member was able to respond with the information you requested. I understand you are just asking and I dont want to lead you on thinking this bottle is special.

The round mark on the bottom tells us that it came from an Owens automatic bottle machine that was not invented until the 20th century. The bottom markings are from the glass factory but its not worth researching at this point and will not ID the contents. The seams on the side will also go all the way to the top and around the lip telling us its ABM. Threads are fairly modern as old bottles were cork tops. If the cap had any value, you should not have painted/plated it. If it was copper it would have been green. If the bottle is thick, its not obvious in the picture. It may be an older early 20th century thread as the early threads were different.

I would look up this bottle shape in my bottle book but its not old enough. It would be a stretch thinking mercury. Its a very common shaped plain bottle that most likely contained aspirin tablets or mouthwash. It could also have been shoe polish or even a salt shaker. If you want to keep it for a container OK but its too plain and common for display IMO.

The cap was green. I know my metals well enough. It had a crack in the side. And was not something I considered valuable. So, I decided to plate it. No big deal. Again. the real value of a find is the value the person places on it. I like the bottle. Common, rare or junk. It was one of the first things I dug. So naturally I wanna keep it. Im not really a bottle collector anyway. However. if the bottle is over 30 years old. It is an antique. If its over 50 years old. I consider it old. And historic. At least by American standards. I like all history. That is what I hunt for. Dont get me wrong. Find items of monetary value is always a plus. And if they carry value. I never clean them except for putting them into a sonic cleaner to remove the dirt. And leave it as is.
I am more of an Urban Archeologist I like to find items, and ID them if possible. And learn about them. That is what interests me.
Anyway. Thanks for the information. Glad I was able to learn something new. So thanks for your time, and help in your responses on this topic.
Cheers.

If the bottle is extra thick it may be shoe polish or a chemical. The copper screw cap sounds interesting.

You can see the thickness of it from the bottom of the pic. Its a heavy little bottle.

RyanOshea, I know what ya mean about your back and accident. I was T-Boned by a guy that ran a red light doing 60 mph back in '98. My back still hurts, spine is twisted in 2 places annnnnnnnnd no scumbags would take my case, because they didn't feel that it was worth more than 150 G's. I still suffer, but now I am getting disability.........NGE

Holly and I got hit by a car going 60+ mph on the highway. A line of cars where stopped. And came to a complete stop at the back. Across from us was a cop. And some idiot speeding down the road saw the cop, and didn't see that traffic had stopped and ran into us.
Been jerked around ever since by insurance companies. They called me again today to try and "make an offer". But my back is still messed up. Im still in constant pain. And im on my way to an Apt for it as I write this.
So sorry to hear you went threw the same BS. It sucks. Have you tried a chiropractor? I must say, it does help.

yes I have been to one many times since then, and yes it does help immensely. They are working on spine with small version of jackhammer with hammer head on it, trying to str8ten the two twisted vertebrae, and I think it's working, it's the most relief I've had in years. I can now hunt for about an hour at a time pain free.......NGE

yeah its great. they have that thing they use on my back too. it moves it just millimeters at a time. allowing the muscles to relearn the right position. Its helped me a lot. I had vertebrae out of place all over. Ribs sticking out in several places. And my left hip got shifted so out of place, it actually shortened by left leg. I so gimp around. But getting better.
Almost got in a nasty wreck again today on the freeway tarmac. A huge semi nearly pushed us into the center median and we just squeezed out of it by inches. Boy did I fly some fingers. Then, it happened again with another semi! And again with a small lorry that almost ran us off the road because he wouldnt merge over as we can off the on ramp. To really make today weird. was, the windows were slightly down in the car. and a tiny pebble got kicked up by a truck tire, flew in the window and hit Holly, my girlfriend who was driving right in the eye!! She couldnt see. God!! I had to take TWO xanax today just to be able to drive home. I still have bad anxiety from my wreck. And today did NOT help it at all. Just glad to be home.

Anyway, keep going to that chiropractor. soon, you will be up to 2 hours no pain. then 3. then all day if you wanted. I can go for about an hour, to an hour and a half with no pain now. though, sometimes I push it. And keep going. And regret it all week. But what can we do. We gotta live and have fun right?
