A buddy of mine comes in to work on Monday and tell me this story....now I'll share it with you all. As it turns out, after finishing up with his got to do things on sunday, he basically saddled up the 4 wheeler with his saddle bags across the gas tank and a few frosty beverages. So he is putting along the county dirt road and looks down to get another cold one out of his saddle bags and sees something laying in the road. His first thought was it looked like the dodge brothers radiator cap I posted a few weeks ago, but still he goes on past about 100 feet then decided to turn around and go back to see what it is. He got back in the general area and had to get off his 4 wheeler to find it again. As it turns out it is what I have pictured here.....A 1851 CALIFORNIA TWENTY DOLLAR GOLD PIECE.....Still haven't authenticated it yet, but a book I have says that excellent condition is valued at 175,000 dollars.....YAHOO. The only thing is there are a few differences in it and the only picture I have and still unsure if it is indeed real......I really hope he's hit the jackpot, but who knows.....anyway thanks for looking and if anybody has any input all would be appreciated.....thanks again.....HH....gregd573

Hope I'm wrong friend but it looks like a repro. The color and surface don't look right to me.

It could just be your pictures. Hope so...still, nice find.

I forgot that there was a load of creek gravel dropped about 100 feet away from where he found it and we thought it might have got there that way....who knows.

thanks badger.....I was really leaning that way, due to the color, it has a copper/bronze tint to it.

I was hoping it had a color more like this...

Nope. Appears to be a copy.

The least they could have done, was made it out of GOLD.

But then again, if they had, it would not have been lying out there to begin with. ;)

Base metal, copper plated, the gold plating has worn off. Look closer at the pit holes. Still a nice find.

I agree, The Mouth Looks like it's Pitted.

Nice Find Anyway.

Counterfeited heavily, this issue is. Chances of finding a real one are pretty slim. Pitting is a dead giveaway, too. I was confused by the original post, are these pics of your friend's coin, or one you have that looks like it?

Possible better story here! If found and counterfeit, could there have been a counterfeiter in area in past. Buried cache! Possible good and bad money around there. Search some more, good luck.

5 years with a MD and i still can't find a coin as good as a guy with a lucky view.....

Isn't that the truth I'm still looking for mine also.....

Thats a really nice find!!!! Twenty dollar gold peice! Man! UR friend is one lucky guy!! Must of had to dug a million pull tabs before he got that!! ;D

Are you kidding me? It is a Counterfeit! The "Baldwin" gives it all away. It should have "Liberty" on the headband. And, it doesn't even look gold.

Great post Greg, very interesting, thanks!

It just goes to show you that by keeping your eyes peeled you just never know what can be found, almost anything is possible.

It's a really cool find either way!

Smiles!
