Greetings,

I took my buddy's necklace off the other day to see what it sounded like on my detector (stock coil) and I was having a hard time picking it up. I expected it to have a nice clear tone, but it was far from that.

It has a 14 K stamp on it. It's not a very thick chain, but even when I balled it up, it was hit or miss.

Once I cranked my sensitivity up, I'd get signals from the minus numbers and numbers in the thirties.

I have tried it before and it picked up my gold ring without a problem along with a nice tone.

It didn't seem to like this chain though. (It was 14 k gold as far as I know)

I tell ya, I'll be digging all of those iffy targets from now on. All of them...

Anyone else have this issue with the XTerra 70?

I have noticed with my X-Terra 70 the ID on low conductors like a nickel is very poor. I found one nickel down 1" that IDed correctly. With iron, foil & tabs rejected, the only other nickel found was 5" deep (my deepest coin with XT70) & it IDed as zinc. HH, George (MN)

What coil are you using? If it is the standard coil wiith the medium frequency then I would try one with the higher frequency. The higher frequency is more sensitive to brass, copper and gold. Gold detectors usually run on higher frequencies, Tim

Yeah standard coil Im using brother...

Ive been eyeing new coils, but cant buy them all. I can only have one, lol... question is which one.

I guess high frequency double d action would be the way to go.

I am pretty sure that the problem is not with the detector. Most detectors do not do a good job of picking up gold chains. Something about how the detector sees them. It does not see a small gold clump, it sees a lot of very tiny pieces and cannot decipher them well. If you look at what the beach hunters drag home, you will notice that they regularly bring home what was once on a chain, but not very often do they find the chain. You can often see that the attachment ring (jump ring) on the pendant or cross is still intact. Leading me to think that the chain broke and would be there too.

Once in a while you will see someone find several rings together. They were probably being worn on a chain and the chain broke. But they do not find the chain.

Just my 2 cents, but I am not so sure that a new coil will fix the problem. You just might want to save your money.

On larger, heavier chains, the detector sees the larger links better.

I know exactly what you mean.......Another thing I would consider is what type of hunting do you normally do? Coin/jewelry coins more than jewelry, beach hunting, relic hunting or a little of all of it. If I hunted coins more than jewelry then I would go for the 6" DD HF coil as I had that same set up on my xterra 50 and it was a very good set up for coins. Then in those park settings the higher frequency and able to get in between trash and such it will be more sensitive to lesser conductive targets such as gold. Plus the little 6" DD HF coil is priced reasonably well and not too expensive.Just my 2 cents, Tim

Don't get to excited about ordering a new coil thinking it will find gold chains cause most detectors have a very hard time sounding off on them even when rubbing the chain on the coil. As was mentioned the detector only "sees" tiny pieces of metal and doesn't add them together unless you could pull the chain tight. To dig all these iffy signals hoping for a gold chain means you are going to waste a lot of time on tiny trash.

I hear ya Sandman...

I took the dig it all approach today and it was torture. :) Nails galore...

Hey,

Owned the 70 and all the coils. Most machines have this issue depending on what frequency theyre are running on. If you u get the 18.75 coil offered by minelab for the 70 it will pick up smaller gold but will be much more chatty especially on the beach. These small chains can be grabbed by most gold detectors. The most popular water detectors that get them are the TESORO Tigershark and stingray series. Tiger shark running at 12.5khz in normal mode and 10 in salt is a bit chatty at some beaches depending on the minerilization its a hit or miss on whether the machine will do great your local beach but in fresh water its awesome! A detector when detecting a chain looks at the individual link, not as the chain as one like we see it, but by the single biggest link. This is why most the time chains are found its by a charm or a clasp.

CB's Opinion and Facts!

I tried the gold chain air test also with the 70. The stock coil would not read it, but the 5x10 HF coil picked it up about 4 inches away.

I find nickels regular and they usually id 8 to 12 mostly 12 down several inches. That is with the tsock coil. The 6inch dd likes them better though.
