I currently use a Sovereign Elite and love it, but it's getting old and things are starting to fall apart. My husband is looking to buy me a new detector for Christmas and he has been looking at the XTerra 505. I've been researching reviews and as with any detector, some like it and some don't. Is there a big difference between the two? I need some opinions from anyone that has used one. Is it difficult to learn? I mostly hunt dry land but do like to use it on the beach occasionally, can the 505 be used in or near water? I'm not sure what questions to ask so all opinions are welcome!

Yes, the 505 is simple to use and can be used near the water. It's waterproof to the control box.

I have used one, and most of the police dept. here uses one as well. I find they are a great detector. :)

take care,

Mike

I have an X-Terra 50 that I bought about 4 years ago and it was my first detector ever.
I have put many hours in with this detector and really love it.
I also have a Sovereign GT that I bought last year and although I don't have nearly as many hours in with it, I have made some great finds at pounded sites.
I also like this detector, but they are two completely different animals.
If you are comfortable with the Sovereign, then you should have no trouble with the X-Terra 505.
It is also very light compared to the Sovereign and uses only 4 AA batteries and has a large display screen.
Another advantage of this detector over other VLF detectors is that changing coils also changes the operating frequency from 3 khz to 7.5 khz to 18.75 khz and there is a wide selection of coils available for these detectors.
Hope this helps some,
Felix
