Very good video , Learn a lot in a short time . Thanks Steve

thanks gonna try to shoot some more begining videos to try to help people new to the deus get a handle on it quicker.

Thanks for the video. Does the round control box have the same functions? Could I just buy the control box and the coil and attach them to my detector as a starting place? Thanks for putting up the video.

There are some shortcomings to just buying the round control box (WS4 Headphone Puck):

- You cannot do software version updates to the coil without the remote. You cannot create and store custom programs to the coil using just puck though you can select them if they already stored in the coil you are using. If you know someone or can borrow someone's remote control, you can create and store custom programs to your coil and then bring them up using the puck and also use the remote to update the coil to the latest software.

- The puck cannot bring up pinpoint mode.

- You lose some of the graphic display options such as the horseshoe and x-y screen and do not have a mineralization bargraph or constant display of actual GB reading simultaneous with Target ID.

- You have to purchase a third party headphone adapter if you want to use the puck as a TID display with wired headphones.

- No backlight.

I am sure there are a few others that I can't think of off the bat. Bottom line is that the puck makes a great minimalist setup for those times you want to work stripped down or when you want to protect the non-waterproof remote and leave it in a safe place, but though you can workaround many of the above issues, in the long run you will want to eventually get a remote.

When I first purchased the Deus, I wasn't sure I wanted to make the big investment so got the light setup with just the 9" coil and WS4 Headphones. Within a week I was impressed enough with the unit and wanted the extra features I went ahead an bought a full up Deus with the 11" coil. That basically gave me two detectors in a pinch, but I usually just swap the 9 and 11" coils as necessary for the job at hand and 90% of the time use the remote. I eventually purchased a used complete Deus setup again (couldn't pass on the deal) and with the HF coil, I have one complete legacy coil setup and one complete HF coil setup.

The WS4 puck (round piece) doesn't allow you to adjust all of the functions that the remote does.

In theory you could buy a coil and the WS4 and attach them to your current dectector... BUT, it would cost you more in the long run than just buying a Deus package setup with everything. The components separately all cost a lot more than buying a Deus package. Like most things do... for instance if you bought a $20K car... if you were to buy every part that is on that car and build the car yourself, the parts would probably cost you $80K or more!! haha

The Deus package with 9" coil, remote and ws4 is $1,600 MSRP (call a dealer, you wont pay that) If you were to buy all of the components that come with that package separately it would cost $1,996 MSRP. Also, when buying a package a dealer will have a better price than the MSRP if you call them. When I've bought separate components I've paid MSRP on them or close to it. So I'd estimate you pay 30% to 40% more if you bought everything separate and not in a package.

So my advice if you want to get a Deus is to buy a package and not piece it together.

Thanks for answering! While I am curious, why would I buy the 9 inch coil when the 11 inch goes deeper? Do detectors get confused from more signals? Thanks

Thanks Outdoor adventure. I have been watching them on EBay, and will probably get one this fall if not sooner. I inherited my Grandparents frugalness:) Ill be like calabash and study up a little untill then!

Smaller coil, smaller footprint, better target separation. I have the 9 and 11. I had the 11 first and once I got the 9, I rarely used the 11. I hunt iron infested areas though. The 11 would be better for quieter areas where you want to cover more ground. I've dung some DEEP targets with the 9 though... calabash and vferrari could give better info on the depth difference between the two, but I personally haven't noticed very much of a difference in hunting scenarios.

OA pretty much nailed it on the 9 vs. 11" depth wise. It is not much of a difference, I use the 11" primarily as a backup to my 9" coil and since each of the coils actually has a unique fundamental winding frequency (but still close to the base approximate 4/8/12/18 khz frequencies) sometimes you find that one coil will run quieter than the other at a particular site with EMI. I will pull out the 11" if I am scanning (not gridding) a large field for the greater swing coverage and the slight depth advantage. I prefer the 9" coil vs. the 11" as my everyday coil, although, I am now liking the 9" HF coil as my everyday coil, but that's another story. Unfortunately, at the present time, XP is not selling the HF coils as part of a Deus detector package so you have to buy them separately.

I was given this advice by a experienced deus user before I bought mine and he said buy the nine , of course I bought the 11 thinking it would be better . Long story short I bought a used nine and didn't take me long to figure out why he said but a nine . the 11 sets in the corner 98% of the time. You can buy a deus way cheaper than the msrp you might be surprised out how much cheaper call a dealer. Also if your looking for a used one I have them on the forums from 900 to 1100. but add just a little that and get a brand new unless of course the used is like new and has a lot of warranty lefted on it.

Ive used the 11" coil for most of the 18 months I have used the Deus. Works very well but Ive recently started using a 9" a lot more. Mainly because its better in iron and a little better balanced setup

I would recommend the 9" coil as well. It will separate the targets a little bit better and to hit those large fields/meadows, I go with the 13" X 11" coil. Some folks state the 13" X 11" is not the greatest but I have had fantastic luck with it and the large footprint covers ground quickly.

I think 11" coils are depth overkill on any machine. In the days of yore most machines came with an 8" coil, with a 12" available for deeper cache hunting. Most manufacturers seem to provide 11" coils as standard these days due to all the hype about "depth". I hardly ever take my 8" coils off my Minelabs or Garretts, and I find plenty. If the ground is not disturbed by landscaping or other causes of dirt piling up like flooding most lost coins, jewelry, buttons, etc will be found in the top 10" of soil with most less than 8". Pinpointing and separation are more important than extreme depth to me, and the smaller coils will hit harder on tiny objects than larger coils will. Still haven't pulled the trigger on a Deus, like the light weight and wireless, but have few untouched places to hunt near me so the cost is keeping me shy.

When I got mine they didn't have the 11 in package just the 9.When they offered the eleven I was upset but have loved the deus so much I've seen no need for improvement the nine is great.

reading this thread... maybe I paid too much for a used deus that turned out to be out of warranty, but thats another story.

...It did come with the 11" coil. I'm qualifying that as good for covering the large swaths of parkland that I'm more inclined to hunt because they're more readily accessible and I work too much. Trouble is that when I get into the those areas where most of the signals are, Im finding them to be so concentrated that I have a hard time with my separation and targeting. Hence Im thinking maybe a 9" coil wold serve me well?

My question to you forum gurus: if I wanted to get a 9" coil, seems I might as well get an HF coil... would you agree? But should I go with the HF 9" round, or the HF 9.5" elliptical? Im leaning towards the elliptical, but what do they mean when they say it's more selective than the 9" round? Any additional info you could add would be appreciated.

Thanks again for all the information.

I've noticed this too man.... I'm in the process of selling my T2SE to justify buying a second Deus. So I've had my eye out for a good price on a used Deus and the prices people are buying a used Deus for isn't far off a new price... "just add a little" like you said and you have a new one with full warranty and fresh batteries. So unless people start selling used ones for cheaper, or unless I can come across a sick deal on a used package (I've heard of a few great deals), then I am going to buy a new Deus.

vferrai really likes the 9 hf, ill let him talk about it. I had the 5 x 9.5 for a while it was my buddys and I tested it for him while he was doing treatments like the little coil. I will be buying the 9 hf for my general hunting though and might pick up a 5 x 9.5 too for those special situations.

If I could get a used coil, stem, remote, wireless phones for south of 900 with warranty, that's like 600+ off new and seems worth it.

Obsessive, I would def consider one of the hf coils for a second coil. Probably can't go wrong with either version.
