XLT vs DFX + other Q's

I bought an XLT in July after being away from the hobby for years. My previous detector was a White's Coinmaster so i had/have a lot to learn. Anyway, I started having problems with the XLT....pinpoint trigger would stick and another problem with broken signals..even when detector was raised at waist level. My dealer sent it back to WHite's for repair and loaned me his DFX which i still am using. I really like the DFX and seems to be getting deeper targets than the XLT. I found an 1964 IH and no date Shield nickle in and area that i had searched previously with my XLT. I can turn the sensitivity way up with the DFX....if i did that with the XLT i got all kinds of +95 readings...is that normal??? Just curious if this is some normal differences between the 2 machines and the dual freq. or if the differences may not be accurate because my XLT was not operating correctly? I figured this would be the time to upgrade as i will have a basically new machine when the send it back. OH, i am not doing ANY water detecting...just midwest soils. I by no means am an expert, just wanting some expert opinions.

One other Q...started looking at some parks and how in the world to you differentiate between tabs and gold???.. even nickels are tough to find

Turning up the sensitivity on DFX you mean increasing AC and DC values as well as putting up the preamp gain? If you are not getting 95's(falsing) you are most likely not running the machine hot enough and loosing depth. There is a trade off because I hate listening to all the falsing chatter. My son says it's no big deal and that he filters it no problem. My buddy has an XLT. He was going hunting with us and was not getting the depth we were so he kept making adjustments and checking the good deep targets we would find. He was able to make the necessary adjustments to get the depth. I suspect that this increased his falsing but don't know.

When i increased the sensitivity, all i did was up the AC values. I got tons of +95 and searched an area...turned around and went the direction i just came from....turned AC value back down to 68... and found a shield nickle and an indian head following my footprints that i had just searched with the AC value in the low 70's. So i assume that some of the +95's i was getting were actually good targets...not totally false signals. Does the dual freq allow for higher sensitivity? Being new to the hobby, maybe i just dont know how to set it. I just thought that this would be the time to upgrade if i was going to. Other than the dual freq, is there a logical reason why the DFX would be significantly different from the XLT?

Heck yes the DFX is significantly different than the XLT. It knocks the socks off the XLT! There are many more guys using the better detector and with the extra gain adjustment it is more versatile if you use the extra programs or customise it.

The only disadvantage I have with most Whites is they can't be hip mounted and you get tired of holding that thing up all day.
