XLT troubles

Ok, I know I just got me XLT not too long ago. Perhaps i'm being a little impatient. ::)

My only decent find so far was that 1957 quater at 4" down on the first swing of the machine. ;D Since then, I have found nothing but garbage and getting an "overload" over a 2 foot plow blade that I found in a field by my job. More often than not, I get a signal "clear" with each swing, pinpoint, dig the depth that it reads at and come up with nothing. The other day I was digging a signal and the hole ended up being 1ft square. Ran the coil over it again with a +VDI number and repeated signal. Depth read 1.5 inches??? I gave up after a half an hour on that hole. I have yet to tweak any programs. I've tried the basic programs. I really could use some advice on tweaking my xlt. Would "just" turning up the gain improve things? Any new members here live in the central Jersey area?

Thanks

Wolf I would suggest you try a different area if you have not. It does sound like you have a problem with something interfering with your machine. I would try a school area away from power lines where you will come across a lot of clad to practice on. Try the coin and jewelry program. Sometimes a drink can will show a good vid # and show 1 and a half to two inches and be very deep I have dug them at over a foot. The depth is only accurate for coin size objects. You may have to turn your ac sensitivity down and your pre amp gain down if your getting a lot of false signals. I have used a XLT a lot if this does not help let me know and I will try to help you get it figured out.

I have personal experience on the drink can issue just today!!! I got a HOT signal at 1.5"
with a VDI of around +72, and a repeatable coin icon showing, no matter which way I
swung. So I dug and dug and dug. For a while I thought I was 'detecting the hole'
like in the old days on my 4000d, but finally found a can at about 12"! I also noticed
that on my XLT that I got lots of signals at 1.5" that were in fact a lot deeper. Not that
I pay much attention - it's the SOUND of the beep I go for, not so much the reading.
I never had a 'smart' meter before, and have always just followed the tones. I'm sure
that'll change as I too get used to an XLT display, but for now I still rely on the quality
of the tone I get above threshold.

I have had used a $99 BHunter 6.6 kHz a $250 older Minelab kHz unknown a $300 Lobo STrack 17.5 kHz and a $500 XLT 14.7 kHz, Guess which one I use now, You guessed it, the $99 BHunter, why ? Because it works at VLF (Most Bounty Hunter metal detectors operate at 6.6 KHz...6600 Hz.) compair that to 14.7 kHz for the Whites XLT. Also I had the same depth and false signal issues that you had with my XLT, I even tried custom programs that the dealer gave me but it got so frustating that I sold it for $400. granted Im not able to get down all that deep with my Bhunter but do i really want to dig that deep anyhow? No. I find pleanty of stuff within 6 inches, here are some of the things i found with my $99 Bhunter.

Sounds to me like your over deep iron or some infrastructure , you'll get the phantom beeps that range all over the map in your acceptable range but it's deep or off to the side and the detector is just overwhelmed,if you dig deep enough or wide enough you'll find it ,but unless your looking for buried caches it ain't a coin.HH Bill

I just got an XLT also, I had a solid hit at 6.5 inches but gave up after digging deep and wide, wasn't willing to risk much more of a hole than already dug since I was in a public park. It was the only "phantom" hit today but I kept getting readings of coins being 4 inches down when in fact they were relatively close to the surface, like an inch or less. Is that normal?

i have a xlt and my friend has a dfx. sometimes we get those solid signals and the target isnt where it's supposed to be. i guess it just a very large deep target(iron or hot rocks). my recommendation with the xlt is to get some advanced programs an play around with them. after using the custom programs i have, i WOULD NOT go back to preset. I USE THE THE XLT LINKS AND SEARCH FOR PROGRAMS. I START IN THE RELIC PROGRAM AND TWEAK MOSTLY AC SENS, DC SENS, AND PREAMP GAIN. THERE OTHER TWEAKS BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO DECIDE FOR YOURSELF.

AU79 The XLT does not operate at 14.7 kh it actually operates from 6027.5 HZ to 7274.5 HZ Number 4 at 6592.5 HZ (6.59kh) is the best choice to use if you are not getting any interference. The XLT and DFX are not for every one if you do not like a lot of adjustments and trying different adjustments to figure out the perfect program for your area you will possibly not like them. The factory programs are good but if you practice and learn what different adjustments do you can tune your XLT to where it will be great. I have had 3 XLT's and now have just one and a DFX that I have had for a month and I am just getting it to where I want it adjustment wise. These two detectors can be programed to work fairly well were other detectors will not hardly work at all.
