X-Terra detectors ?

Actually, beyond the root technology (V-Flex) they are all different. The newer '05' series has capabilities that the first gen didn't. For instance, the X-30 was limited to running 7.5kHz only, where the 305 can run 7.5kHz and 18.75kHz. And the X-50 was a 7.5kHz & 18.75kHz machine, but the 505 saw the addition of 3kHz to boot.

There are other differences, but the added frequency abilities were the most significant changes.

Here's a chart that compares the differences in the newer series models.

Keppy I only have experience with the 505 and I love it. The only real difference that may have been a reason to choose the 705 is the backlight on the circuit box but I have a little headlight I bought at Costco that does the trick when we are out after dark. I have heard wonderful reviews from friends on the Etrac.

I debated the 505 vs the 705, but for me it was a no-brainer because the 705 has a Ground Balance Tracking feature -- it automatically adjusts ground balance as you hunt -- which is quite important when ground mineralization is variable. All of the ground where I am is mineralized, but it also might vary from 3 to 30 at the same location I am searching! Otherwise, you'd have to keep stopping and rebalancing your machine as you hunt to keep it detecting optimally; the 705 does it much faster (automatically) and more accurately than the hunter can. Clearly your mileage may vary depending on where you hunt, but for me it was a necessary feature in a detector.

The other two main added features of the 705 are Beach Mode (which I have yet to use) to help deal with mineralization and the dry/wet sand difference, and Prospecting Mode, which is an all-metal mode with a variable iron-mask. Prospecting mode is the deepest-seeking mode, period, but you lose target ID and differing tones; it's great for relic hunting, not just looking for gold.

They're both great machines. Note that only the 70, 505, and 705 can use 3khz-frequency coils, if that matters to you. (I love the 3khz coils! Hit hard on silver.)

Ok thanks for all of your good information ...

I have a 705 and love it! Lots of features for the price point. Does great on dry sand as well!!!

Another related feature of the 705 is the GB Tracking Offset. If you feel that hunting with the GB offset either higher or lower is an advantage at a certain site, you can have the machine Track with your chosen amount of offset (+/- 0 to 15 points in one point increments).

Oh, and Keppy, I see that you too are in NE Ohio. We have some pretty interesting and variable soil conditions because of the glaciers. To give you an idea:

1. Ohio Glacial Map
2. Bedrock Topology of Ohio

I'd recommend the 705 based on our location alone!

Well i guess i will give the 705 a try… And hope i like it as much as i like the Sovereign...

I think you will! The 705 is a very well rounded detector!

Why do you need to replace the Sovereign?

I have a 505, I love it. Had problems with coil ears cracking. But have since fixed the problem. Other than that, it's great.

Yep I have the 505 as well. It's a great detector! Very versatile and many hunting options. Minelab spends alot of money on r&d, engineering, etc... and it shows in the performance.

Have had mine for a week now and I'm overwhelmingly impressed with it (thanks again,Bart-for the recommendation) I have so far gone mainly to sites I know inside and out, and I'm getting target hits all over places I thought I cleaned out!

Awesome to hear! I had the same experience with my X-Terra. So many finds in my "hunted out" sites. Keep us posted.

I will never replace the Sovereign was just adding to my group of hunters..

Keppy, did you pull the trigger on the X-Terra?

Not yet had one before and sold it it was to be a 705 or Nokta Fors i almost bought the Nokta but the 705 might be a little more suited for me . now it is a toss up i will let you know when i get one ..

The X-Terra 705 is an Excellent Detector ...... it's almost like having 3 detectors in one! Since you have the ability to change the frequencies with the coils! Highly recommend the 10.5" DD Coil 7.5khz.... really enhances the performance of this detector!
