Hello...I found a silver badge centerpiece that says deputy marshall Galena territory...when I did an online search I found a small reference to Wyatt Earp as deputy marshall in this territory....the center has an eagle with a ribbon in its mouth and a suns rays in the background...any links or suggestions on where to find more info? Thanks,
C
p.s. I will try to get a picture to post...

Tenezman, welcome to Treasure Net!

I found a Google entry that listed the Galena Territory (Ill) and Earp, but not in the same thought process... and although I don't think the great Wyatt Earp was there, Galena was home or host to nine civil war generals including Ulysses S. Grant who ran his candidacy for POTUS from this place.

Though I found no mention of a Marshal, I am intrigued and will research more.

Looking forward to a picture of your badge piece! Galena Territory has an interesting history which can be found at this link: http://www.galenahistorymuseum.org/timeline.htm

WOW, finding a piece of a badge is cool. Can't wait to see the pix of it. I don't think Wyatt Earp was a lawman in Illinois, although he was born in Monmouth, Illinois.

T,

welcome to the board.

Very nice find you have there.

Hope someone will be able to help you with
more of an I.D.

TT, (blushing), :-[

there is a Galena, Illinois. But I think Earps'
family was pushed out of Monmouth, Illinois ,
where he was born, and moved to Iowa.

have a good un...........

Did a quick search on ol' Wyatt and learned his family moved to California sometime after leaving Monmouth, Ill. Seems he had the wunderlust as many of us Americans do/did. How this (piece of a) badge could be traced to Wyatt Earp himself seems difficult, but I know the brains on this forum will find a way if at all possible. That would truly be amazing if Wyatt ever wore that badge!!! The value would skyrocket, I assume.

Thank you-all for the info...I have had alot of internet surfing to do and weeding through... it helps to pick everyones brains...The piece is about an inch and a quarter in diameter...I honestly am not familiar with all the different Galena areas so I have been tryin to discern where the actual Galena territory in question would be...thanks again,
C

Tenezman...

Be careful... the second half of your your quote above actually references someone else on that site.

" Washburne, Elihu Benjamin 1816-87, American politician and diplomat, b. Livermore, Maine. Admitted to the bar in Massachusetts, he opened (1840) his law practice in Galena, Ill. As a U.S. Representative from Illinois... "

This is why I said above I dont think Earp is your guy, the Google searches are deceiving.

Do you live in Ill?

Wow! Thats alot of facts on old Wyatt Earp. Here's another one. Wyatt and Virgil Earp also spent some time in Northern Idaho, late 1890's. Opened a saloon called the White Elephant in Eagle City near Murray Idaho. Also filed and some say "won" some placer gold claims there. All on record with signatures. Colorful characters those boys. Wouldn't have much to do with the badge though. I don't think they were into law enforcement during there stay here.

Thanks for all the great input...I put that last blurb in there before I could really research it...I actually cant find my original information that ever even referenced Wyatt Earp and Galena...the search goes on...I gotta say that historical finds/relics really make for alot of fun just tryin to figure out where something so old could even fit into history... :) I will continue to do my homework and any and all feedback is much appreciated...
Thanks,
C
