WWII Victory Penny Pin?

Was wondering if anyone had seen anything like this. I was unpacking and came across it in one of my boxes and don't remember ever seeing it before which is strange to begin with...anywho...it appears that someone took some pennies and created a pin to celebrate the end of WWII. The top penny is a 1937 that has had a big letter V stamped onto it and a straight pin bent and welded to the back. The lower penny is a bit hard to read because it was hammered into a dome shape but appears to be a 1948. Does anyone happen to know if these were made in quantity or is it perhaps just someones personal creation to celebrate the end of the war? Thanks!

If you want to get technical...WW2 was considered to have been from 1939 to 1945...1939 because thats when Germany invaded Poland...but some say 1937 because thats when Japan was at war with China...as to the 1945 date, as I said the penny was hammered and it apppears to be 48 (its quite possible it was a 45 smudged to 48 with hammering)...if this didn't have something to do with WW2 then why the big "V" and the dates that it appears to be?

And on a side note...10-20,000 Japanese troops did not surrender in China until late 1948...so, would the dates technically be 1937-1948 or are the dates only according to when the U.S. was fighting? ;)

Sorry to reply to such an old thread but I just discovered a victory penny in my father-in-laws collection. It's exactly like the one pictured above except the date on mine is 1942. However, I don't know anything about it and I was hoping someone here could shed some light on this subject.

Looks like a fairly common item. I found these with a quick search.

There are several others on Worthpoint.
