Went to my usual Thursday night auction last night. Was perusing the lots and saw a box full of old airmail envelopes. Picked one up and saw that it was WWII correspondence from a soldier to his sweetheart here in the states. I thought it would be pretty cool reading so when It came up I bid on it. No one else was interested so I got the whole box for $2. Took it home and was up late last night looking through the box. Turns out the soldier was in the Pacific theater. About 80% of the letters are to his sweetheart or his mother. Some of the letters contain pictures, mostly of soldiers posing with natives in the islands. Some of them have old news clippings. There was also one envelope that contained a bunch of Japanese invasion currency.

One of my dream jobs...let's say I hit the lottery...would be to buy every lot of WWII letters I could get my hands on, and start an archived collection of them, open to the public and researchers. Crazy idea, isn't it?

Are you keeping the letters, or selling them?

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet. I will probably sell them eventually. I want to read them first. My father also asked me not to sell them until he gets gander at them. Clovis , if and when I decide to sell I'll let you know. I think they should go to someone or some place that would archive and preserve them.

My grandmother still has all the letters that my Grandfather wrote during WW2. Those are one of the only things that i have asked to be left when she passes.

Should digitize them . If there are names and stuff on them sending the copies to the heraldary sites isnt a bad idea to . Never know who in the future maybe interested in them .
