Hi everyone,

Both my grandfathers served in active military during WWII, mom's dad in the army and dad's dad in the navy. Dad's dad served as a gunner's mate on some sort of supply or re-supply ship in the South Pacific (wish I'd paid more attention to his stories when I was a kid now, of course). He brought back a few things from his time 'in the service', as he called it. A pack of naughty playing cards I accidentally saw many years ago and never saw again, as I'm sure they were promptly disposed of, some really disturbing photos I came upon after his death and quickly gave away to the local historical society, and this....pin thingy. I don't know a thing about it and cannot ever remember my grandfather talking about it. I'm sure it was something he came upon, as he never saw combat during his service (that much I remember), but what is it? The closest I can find is a hat or lapel pin but this doesn't look exactly like any of the examples I can find. There was certainly at one time a third prong on the back, in the same top-of-wing position as the other, but seemingly otherwise this is the whole piece. Weighs nearly nothing and looks like it would be a dull silver if cleaned. (Also I can't find my tape measure so here's the pin thingy next to my pen for size comparison.

Any wisdom is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dana

Kreigsmarine (Navy) hat badge. The officers version can be seen here on Oskar Schomburg, the infamous captain who intercepted the ship carrying the Ark of the Covenant in 1936.

It's a "Heer" (Army) eagle for a visor cap. Kriegsmarine versions were gold colored. The German name is "Reichsadler"

From what I remember that style of single piece stamped eagle (pins are not soldered on but part of the stamping) is a late war variety, but I could be wrong. It's a shame one of the pins is missing, but still worth maybe $40 or $50... you can find similar ones retailing for $60 - $70.

Nice piece, if you ever decide to part with it, let me know

wehrmacht cap.webpIt would have been on a cap like this one

Dang, well thanks for the correction Ken... I guess I got so excited by the Raiders of the Lost Ark image that popped up that I forgot to double check.

NOLA Ken is correct. I have dozens of authentic TR items for sale, if anyone's interested shoot me a PM. Time to get rid of the collection. I'm reasonable. I'm gonna try and post an ad in the classifieds here in a day or so when I have a chance.

Wow, thanks for a superfast solve you guys! I've really no interest in keeping war memorabilia so Ken, if I can figure out how, I'll be happy to message you regarding a sale (if that's allowable on the forum, etc).

Thanks again to everyone who's taken the time to read/comment, you folks rock.
