Exciting recovery. Unfortunate loss on whatever was in the center. Think I would have left that hole exposed and come back with buckets or something. Good lesson for us all to maybe leave the ring alone until you get home. I know I’d have done what you did but maybe shouldn’t 🤷🏻‍♂️

Idea that’s probably dumb: bring a cordless shop vac back if you know where the hole was and vacuum around that area. Then search that?
 

We had a permission to metal detect a farm well north of the battlefield. I found this WWII aviator's ring in the area of the farmhouse, working through the trash.

This is what I realized after 40 minutes of hands/knees searching. The pieces was dirt covered so it blended in.

It was a pearl looking piece with a gold prop.

No more field cleaning.
 

Things happen, lesson learned. That ring is remarkable regardless- Congrats!!
