WWI Victory Loan Badge/Pin & ???

Hey Gang, I got out for a couple of hours today in the yard of a Victorian homeplace, which was close to the railroad responsible for taking CW soldiers from Richmond, VA to Atlanta.

I found a Victory Loan badge from WWII (I think). From my understanding these were given out when the Victory Loan train came through various cities. This one does not have a hole in it like those made from the German cannons & tanks. It's too thin to be a token, but almost as thick as a dime. Not too far from this Victory Loan, I found the old railroad spike.

I thought the larger round object was part of a pocket watch, but after I got it home, I realized there was iron on it, so I'm not sure what it is.

As far as the button is concerned, it reminds me of those from the 1950's, which were cloth covered and on ladies dresses, but I don't remember any of those having an iron shank. The face of the button is not smooth, and was done during manufacturing, and not from damage.

Any information, thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Breezie

Re: WWII Victory Loan Badge/Pin & ???

When I first looked at it I was sure it was part of a watch or clock but after reading your post and looking at it again - it could be the back part of a music box - but this is a guess only...chetler

Re: WWII Victory Loan Badge/Pin & ???

Chetler you may be right about it being part of a music box because as you can see from the pic below, it is too thick to be a pocket watch. The iron parts on it were not original and were just stuck on it along with some crystallized rocks/sand. The last pic shows it after removing the iron gunk.

Anyone have any thoughts on the button?

Thanks, Breezie

Re: WWII Victory Loan Badge/Pin & ???

Breeze I was up all night looking for your button! I use to love buttons and I think I'm burnt out on em now! Looking at it I have an image locked in my head that may not even be there, you know how that is. Tell me...I know you see something there but is it a pic to you or just maybe a design? I keep wondering if there is a word at the top part of it(the top meaning as it is posted anyway). When you are bored :sleepy4: with messing with it please mail it to me! I promise to return it , I'm a nice girl :angel10:. Nope, I don't think it's of value, I just obsess over mysteries!

Great find! Yes - appears to be WWI - here's another:

WWI VICTORY VOLUNTEER PINBACK With Large "V" at Center and Torch Held High
Circa 1917 This is an authentic WWI era pinback that was found in an old vault at the Bureau of Public Debt (BPD) in the late 1990s when the BPD relocated to West Virginia.

During WWI, pins like this one were given out to citizens purchasing bonds in support of the War effort.

This sturdy pinback button is all bronze tone metal with raised lettering and in very good condition. This pinback features a large "V" at center, a torch held high and two stars flanking the "V". It measures approximately 7/8" in diameter. The pin device on the back is secure and stable.

The back of the button has no writing - you see the reverse of the raised lettering on the front.

Re: WWII Victory Loan Badge/Pin & ???

Mack, Thanks for the link, but for some reason it would not open on my computer. Did anyone else have that problem? Could you repost the link.

Bramble, Great pic & Great info; thank you so much. I wonder what the selling price was? Mack maybe right about it being WWI since your article states circa 1917.

Tink, sorry you lost sleep over my button; hopefully you didn't have nightmares too. ;D I have it soaking in some peroxide now, and will post another close-up pic of the face shortly. After looking at it again, I agree there is some type of pattern that is not haphazardly done. I didn't see any small letters or script. Maybe a fresh pic will help.

Thanks again, Breezie

Re: WWI Victory Loan Badge/Pin & ???

I'm going to green check this post because I feel we've properly ID everything but the button, and I may put it up by itself later. Tink, I soaked it in peroxide, but it didn't help very much; it still looks the same, and I cannot see letters.

Don & Bramble thanks again for the great work on the WWI Victory Loan Pin.

Chet, I think it is part of a pocketwatch because I found a tiny "S" & "F" on one part of it. . . .of course there could have been music boxes with this feature too; not sure.

;D Breezie
