Re: WWI ??????

That's rather unusual. Are there any stamps on the back of it? year/maker?

Re: WWI ??????

Black powder weapons weren't used in ww1. That item straps onto arm, probably for personal medical supplies. Compress, tape, etc.

Re: WWI ??????

Yea... that is unusual.

The Great Seal Button was first introduced in 1902 and still in use today (thanks PBK), and generaly field gear didn't have the buttons, but snaps of some sort. It's possible that the item is Pre-WW1...

nhbenz is right to ask if the equipment has any additional markings or numbers at all on it... let us know. ;)

Re: WWI ??????

Just a WAG, but the WWI medics had what I have read called "wound tag belts" for triage or the wounded. Different colored tags were put on the wounded for transport and attention to the wounds. That may be what they looked like??

Re: WWI ??????

It would be helpful to see the back of this. This may be something that was peiced together, as happened, not uncommonly, after WWI. Just a thought... don't shoot me if someone really smart shows up. It's certainly an interesting belt... and since I don't recall crossing your path, I'll include a "welcome" to you DDE. -Ben

Re: WWI ??????

Deep, am i seeing this correct, 2 small side pockets on each side of the large center pocket, then a long strap and buckle arrangement?

I seriously doubt you could find a WW1 canvas gear item in that shape, my guess is more WWII.
Wasn`t leather the main item used during WWI whereas canvas became the main stable afterwards and remains til present?

I remember seeing totes like that for med gear both personel and field meds, sometimes they would grab 20-30 at a time though the strap and sling them over a shoulder to dispense to troops along a line or formation. After they were emptied they were just tossed.

Re: WWI ??????

Black powder arms were used to a certain extent by the Balkan States,Russia,Germany,The British Commonwealth, and France during WW1.

Russia was so short of arms that they used over 1.2 million black powder arms. They were carried mainly by reserve and second line troops but some saw battle. In 1914 and 1915 Russia received from France 450,000 Gras rifles and 105,000 Kropatchek rifles,Italy supplied 400,00 Vetterli-Vitali rifles.Russia also used 362,000 Berdan 2 rifles that had been held in reserve.

Serbia issued Berdan 2 rifles to their reserve.

Colonial troops of England,France, and Germany in the mid east and Africa used black powder rifles.

Some black powder arms were even issued in WW2 in Germany and Finland. Most countries did not dispose of their black powder reserve arms till after WW2.

Colonial troops of the Commonwealth were infact not British. They were new zealanders,Australians and Canadans. These troop fought most of the battles in Africa and the Middle-East,in the WW1 .All used Lee Enfield 303 which is not a black powder gun.The only forces in the British army to use black powder weapons was the Home-Guard.

Re: WWI ??????

I should not have used the term British Commonwealth as it was not formed untill after WW1.It slipped my mind that Australia,New Zealand, and Canada were at that time colonies.

I agree that Australia and New Zealand used the .303 Lee Enfield throughtout WW1.Canada used the Ross model 1910(Mark 3) for the first couple of years until it was pulled from service and relegated to training purposes at which time they were issued the Lee Enfield..

I intended to say that blackpowder rifles were issued to some of the black units that fought in Africa during the early part of the war when Britian was suffering from a shortage of rifles.

By the way the original loading for the .303 British Service cartridge was compressed blackpowder.
