i couldn't figure out the background on this brooch. it reads "GOTT MIT UNS" and "LUITPOLDHAUS" above and below a cross, with a red enamel background. it is silverplated copper. the back is hand-engraved with a number "10".

from the style of construction, the pin hinge, and the simple "C" catch, this dates to around 1910-1920. i do not think the "10" on the back is the year 1910...i think it is more likely to be a badge # or ID # for whoever wore this.

"gott mit uns" was used by the german military in the 2 wars. IF this is war related, and i don't know that it is, it would be wwi.

Luitpoldhaus is a lodge (supposedly the oldest, built in the 19th century) in the alps. Luitpold was the prince of bavaria and he died in 1912--perhaps this is a memorial type piece.

i just couldn't quite put all these elements together to determine what organization or event or thing this pin represents. i'm hoping somebody recognizes the design.

The first part is German "god with us" I cant find a translation for the rest? HH

The rest comes up as Prince Luitpold of Bavaria 1901-1914

That particular style of pin and catch was in use on German pins well into WW2 and beyond. It falls into the category of "tinnies" basically cheap souvenir pins given out at events and by pretty much every organization in Germany. I'm not by any means an expert on them as my collecting focused on military issued badges and medals. My immediate thought is that it's likely a Wehrmacht or Heer veterans pin from a reunion that was held at that lodge. With the lack of a swastika I would put it between 1918 - 1936ish but it could even be post WW2

You may be able to research it more and find out, or post it on the Wehrmacht Awards forum in the "tinnies" section and there will likely be someone who can tell you more.

Edit: the "10" on the back is likely a makers mark rather than an owners id of any kind.

broken knee--the Luitpoldhaus is a lodge of some kind in the German alps, built in the 19th century and named after prince regent Luitpold (info found on german wikipedia)

ken--thanks for the lead on the wehrmacht forum, i will try that avenue. since the "10" is hand-engraved with a graver, i don't think it is a maker's mark--too much trouble and it seems too cryptic.

thanks for teaching me the term tinnies--had not heard it before but i have seen numerous of these pins at flea markets. i don't think this is the same type of piece--though by no means a top quality piece of fine jewelry, the metal is thick and reasonably well finished. the red is kiln fired glass enamel not the cold-painted "enamel" on the tinnies i am seeing, and underneath the enamel the textured pattern is hand-engraved. i will leave the patina on this item, however if i were to polish it it would show a silver-plated finish (that is, where the plating has not worn away), which i think are all levels of quality not seen on tinnies or that type of piece.

and i'm still not 100% sure it is military--was "gott mit uns" used by non-military organizations as well?

Gott mit Uns was used by the Wehrmacht and certain Panzer divisions in WW2 as well as civilian police, so it could also be police related.... The hand engraved number is interesting as it suggests there were a limited number of these made for a special purpose and it's not likely something that was a common souvenir... The Luitpold hall was used for the Nazi Party Congress of 1934 so it could be related to that as well, but the lack of a swastika makes me wonder about that connection, also a search didn't turn up any matches.

"Tinnies" cover a broad range of pins of low and high quality, it pretty much depends on the importance of the event and how much the particular group had to spend on them. So don't be thrown off by the cheapness of some of them, party pins for example were sometimes very high quality.
