It is his ID number or like you said serial number i don't think the number being lower means anything just how it was done.Osage

Do you think it represents that he was the 1,361,662 soldier enlisted? That doesn't make sense to me.

Yes, on one side is that long number I listed and on the other side only his name, not the rank like yours does. I know mine is wwi and yours prob is too. It would be neat if you could return it to the family. I think you can email the national archives to help with that

My grandfather was born IN 1888 so his has to be early in the war

It looks Like your serial number would be camp wheeler Ga. 31st Div. ?
