I found this shovel at a creek, which passes through a public park. The park is relatively modern, but the creek has been there since the mid to late 1800s. The shovel was fairly deep, and it has corroded quite bit, so I dont believe it is a modern variant of the shovel. It also has a small y stamp on the pivoting piece of the handle. I checked the blade for markings, but have yet to find any. Can anybody tell me is this shovel is from the ww2 timeframe and, if so, what the y marking might stand for?

My relic digging shovel is a 1945 Army entrenching tool . mine does not have a Y on the nut like yours does.
mine is marked on the blade'' WOOD U.S 1945.
clean it up, find an old handle and shape to fit and you'll have a back up digger.

I think the wooden handled ones like the one you found were used from the 1940s up to the 1970s. Of course some may have sat in warehouses for years and years before eventually being issued out and were old but new when put into service. If you can clean it up and replace the handle, it would make you a good digging tool. Cool find.

All US folding trench shovels will be marked with a pretty big US and maker's name and date. There have been many cheaper copies made and sold over the years.
