As said an USAF Service Coat button, the button has the seal of the USAF. It was used from April 1949 until about 1995/1996 when the current uniform was phased in. The button was held to the coat by a cotter pin, the buttons were removable so the coat could be sent to the cleaners. If the button is about quarter size it's one of the main closure buttons, if it's around dime size it's one of the pocket buttons.

After reading the size you gave for it, it would be one of the buttons along the front of the coat.

Thank you for the detailed description! This was in a box and I wish I had his coat..... I do remember it when I was a child and its long gone now. There is a treasure story in this story...... my grandpa flew during the war, he flew with the jokers..... he brought home his bomber jacket( leather) with his logo on the back..... he passed in the 70's and grandma in 2002.one month before she passed I had asked her for the jacket and she looked at me funny and she say's," I took it to good will." Lol! Somebody found a cool relic!
