They are pretty tall! Anyone know what thu were used for?

Artillery shell probably.
 

Didn't Germany use something like that for chow to feed the soldiers on the front line? But I'm not sure..
 

My mom said map holders, but I think she is wrong?!
 

They are artillery shell holders, and I think they are Swiss. Cheaper-than-dirt and other surplus catalogs still sell them.
 

Regardless of what that auction listing says, the US military has never used wicker baskets to transport ordinance.
 

I pointed it out for the canister, not the basket. Hell everyone knows Army wicker is painted green.
