WW2 button?

Looks like the shield was removed from the center of the eagle..Any ideas?

That is called the great seal button. It was first used in 1903 and is still being used today. If you can id the backmark, some of the folks here can tell you about when it was made. The last pic shows a loop. That would usually mean it was put inside the jacket or coat as a spare button, I think.
